Saint Mary of the Woods, Ind. – After going almost three weeks between games due to rainouts, cancellations and postponements, the Saint Xavier University softball team (12-8/0-0 CCAC) returned to action with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (Ind.) Wednesday afternoon in Saint Mary of the Woods, Ind. Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) threw a complete game with six strikeouts in a 3-1 victory in game one and sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) drove in a pair of runs, and had three RBI on the day, as the Cougars rallied for three runs in the top of the 6^th to give junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) the win in the circle and Summers tallied the save in a 4-3 triumph in game two.

Game One:

• Junior designated player Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) doubled twice in three at-bats with an RBI.
• Freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) also was 2-for-3, along with a run scored, a stolen base and a walk.
• Wright went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
• Summers (8-4) went the distance for the 10^th time in the circle this year after throwing 7.0 innings and scattering seven hits with one earned run and a walk.
• Wroble led off the top of the 3^rd with a base hit, stole second, was sacrificed over to third and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Wright.
• Carr doubled the lead to 2-0 in the top of the 4^th by slugging a one-out RBI two-bagger.
• SMWC got a run with two outs in the bottom of the 6^th off an RBI base hit.
• Senior infielder Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) laced a double to start the top of the 7^th and scored two batters later on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) to provide insurance.
• Summers registered a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7^th to notch the win.

Game Two:

• Wroble was a table-setter out of the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
• Wright went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a double, a steal and a walk.
• Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had two hits in four trips to the plate with a double and a run scored.
• Claas (4-4) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, three walks and striking out two batters.
• Summers earned her second save after working 1.1 innings out of the bullpen with a strikeout.
• The Pomeroys struck first with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1^st and extended their lead in the bottom of the 4^th on another RBI base hit.
• Wright bashed an RBI double in the top of the 5^th to cut the deficit to 2-1.
• An RBI double put Saint Mary-of-the-Woods up 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning.
• In the top of the 6^th, freshman outfielder Megan Kirnbauer reached base on an error that allowed junior pinch-runner Julia Czart (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) to score from second base. Junior designated player Kyla Kissee (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Wright gave SXU the lead with a sac fly of her own.
• SMWC loaded the bases with two outs after a walk. Summers came in and rolled a groundball to Wroble at second to end the frame.
• Summers induced a pair of groundouts with a strikeout in between to secure the road victory for Saint Xavier.

Saint Xavier (12-8/0-0 CCAC) hosts Indiana University South Bend in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader for their 2024 home opener on the new refurbished SXU Softball Field that now has an artificial playing surface. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
