Becker Powers SXU Softball Past Judson in DH Sweep

CHICAGO – Sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) belted three doubles on the day with four RBI and a run scored to help guide Saint Xavier University softball (22-12/10-4 CCAC) to a pair of victories over Judson University (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) limited the Eagles to just four hits as she recorded her sixth shutout of the year in a 3-0 win in game one. Becker clubbed a pair of doubles and sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) mashed a two-run home run to aid junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton), who threw her eighth complete game of the season, in a 7-1 triumph in game two.

Game One:
  • Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) also was 2-for-4 and she added a stolen base.
  • Freshman outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) went 2-for-4
  • Wright scored twice, with a double and a steal while going 1-for-3.
  • Becker went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
  • Sophomore catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) had to official at-bat as she drew a walk and hit a sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, senior infielder Brook Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) legged out an infield single and Wright, who doubled earlier in the inning, moved up to third and scored on an error.
  • Wright led off the bottom of the 6th by reaching on an error, stole second and Becker drove her in on an RBI double. Natanek made it 3-0 after lifting a sac fly to left to score freshman pinch runner Madeline Wroblewski (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph).
  • Summers rolled three ground balls, two on comebackers, in the top of the 7th to notch the win.
Game Two:
  • Becker tallied three RBI and scored a run.
  • Wright finished 1-for-3.
  • Junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and a walk.
  • Koran was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
  • Junior outfielder Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) singled in her only at-bat with two walks and a run scored.
  • Claas (6-5) scattered six hits over 7.0 innings with one earned run, a walk and six strikeouts.
  • The Cougars batted around in the bottom of the 3rd and scored six runs. Stahulak started the rally with a leadoff walk and Becker crushed a two-run double with the bases loaded three batters later. Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) followed with an RBI sac fly, Wright hammered her team-leading fifth home run of the year with a two-run blast over the wall in left and Koran lined an RBI double.
  • Judson got on the board on the top of the 4th with a one-out solo home run down the left field line.
  • Becker capped the scoring in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • JU got runners on base in the top of the 5th with two outs before Claas induced a flyout to Wroble. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 6th and Claas worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.
  • Class registered a 1-2-3 top of 7th to give SXU its fifth consecutive victory.
Saint Xavier (22-12/10-4 CCAC) concludes the regular season when they take on Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader at the SXU Softball Field on Saturday, April 27. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
