Summers Stays Hot as No. 1 SXU Softball Tops No. 6 ONU, 5-0

Crown Point, Ind. – Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) tossed her second consecutive shutout in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament, as she allowed just two hits to give the No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team (26-12/12-4 CCAC) a 5-0 win over No. 6 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Friday evening in Crown Point, Ind. The victory puts the Cougars in the CCAC Tournament Championship for the sixth consecutive season, not including the 2020 season that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Summers improved her record to 18-6 in the circle after logging her eighth shutout of the year with a walk and five strikeouts.
  • Sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) paced the offense, driving in three runs with a pair of walks and she went 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Freshman outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had a pair of hits in three at-bats with a run scored.
  • Senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) tied the single-game program record for walks with four and she scored two runs with no official at-bat.
  • Junior outfielder Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) was 2-for-2 with a run.
  • SXU drew a season-high 10 walks in the contest.
  • Wright opened the scoring by slicing an RBI single to right field to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
  • The Cougars tallied three runs in the top of the 3rd as Wright, sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) and junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) each drew walks with the bases loaded to extend the advantage to 4-0
  • Wright drew another walk with the bases loaded in the top of the 6th to cap the scoring.
  • Summers didn't allow a hit until one out in the bottom of the 4th and worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th with two strikeouts in the frame, including a called third strike to end the game.
No. 1 Saint Xavier (25-12/12-4 CCAC) awaits its opponent in the CCAC Championship as No. 3 Roosevelt University plays No. 2 University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 4. The winner of that game plays Olivet Nazarene, scheduled for 3:00 pm, in the ninth game of the tournament. The winner of game nine plays SXU in the championship at 5:00 pm.
