Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) combined to go 5-for-6 with five runs scored, five stolen bases and she added two RBI to help the Saint Xavier University softball team (9-3/0-0 CCAC) come away with a pair of wins on the final day of the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Dome Tournament Sunday afternoon at the SAU Dome in Davenport, Iowa. Crane tied her single-game school record with four stolen bases while going 2-for-3 at the plate in a 7-6 victory over Aquinas College (Mich.) Sunday morning. Junior infielder
Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) collected three RBI as the Cougars outlasted Mount Mercy University (Iowa) in their afternoon contest. Sophomore pitcher
Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7
th, recording a strikeout to earn her second save of the day.
Game One:
- Crane scored three runs with a walk and an RBI from the lead-off spot.
- Sophomore infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had three hits in four at-bats with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored.
- Junior infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI triple.
- Strand made the start in the circle and she ended up with her first save of the season. Strand tossed 2.2 innings overall, allowing five hits, four earned runs, a walk and registering five strikeouts.
- Sophomore pitcher Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) moved her record to 4-0 after throwing 4.1 innings of relief with seven hits given up, two earned runs and three walks.
- Aquinas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a solo home run.
- Crane tied the game in the bottom half of the inning by stealing home.
- The Saint clubbed three RBI doubles to go up 4-1 in the top of the 3rd.
- Crane put down an RBI bunt single and O'Connor hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the 3rd.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Wright tied the game with an RBI triple, Wroble hit an RBI bunt single and Crane stole home for the second time to give SXU a 6-4 lead.
- Senior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) lined an RBI single to push the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the 6th.
- AQ pulled within a run in the top of the 7th on a two-out, two-run double. Strand re-entered the game and posted a strikeout to claim the save.
Game Two:
- Crane went 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
- O'Connor was 2-for-4 and she scored two runs.
- Sophomore catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Wroble stole two bases with a run scored and an RBI while going 1-for-5.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) came away with the win (3-0) after going 5.0 innings and surrendering 14 hits, seven runs (five earned) and walking two.
- Wesner pitched 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits, two earned runs, two walks and a strikeout.
- Strand's final line was 0.2 innings pitched with a walk and a strikeout.
- O'Connor hit a sac fly to drive in Crane, and she scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore designated player Yalayzah Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) to put Saint Xavier up 2-0 in the top of the 1st.
- Mount Mercy hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd.
- The Cougars scored six runs in the top of the 3rd. O'Connor picked up two RBI off an error, Johnson laced a two-run single, freshman infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) had an RBI base hit and Wright drove in a run on an error.
- MMU plated two runs in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
- Crane smacked an RBI single in the top of the 5th to extend the lead to 9-3.
- The Mustangs responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th, and they added an RBI groundout and a two-run double in the bottom of the 6th to make in 9-7.
- Wroble tallied an RBI off of an error and another run scored on the play to give the Cougars an 11-7 advantage.
- Mount Mercy got a run on a one-out RBI single. Two batters later Strand came in, she walked in a run, rolled a ground ball out on a fielder's choice and recorded the final out on a strikeout.
Saint Xavier (9-3/0-0 CCAC) is scheduled to play Indiana Institute of Technology in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm central first pitch in Fort Wayne, Ind.
