Wright Guides SXU in 6-4 Win over MNU in Season Opener

Sioux Center, Iowa – Junior infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) lashed an RBI triple to left field to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the 5th to help the Saint Xavier University softball team (1-0/0-0 CCAC) a 6-4 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) in their season opener in the night cap of the Dordt University Dome Tournament Friday evening in Sioux Center, Iowa. Freshman pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) earned her first collegiate victory in her collegiate debut, working 4.0 innings of relief with just two hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts.
  • Junior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) made an immediate impact for the Cougars, going 3-for-3 with four stolen bases to tie the single-game program record, two runs scored and a walk.
  • Senior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
  • Junior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had two hits in four at-bats with a double, an RBI single and two runs scored.
  • Junior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
  • Sophomore outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) finished 2-for-4 and she scored a run.
  • Senior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made start, pitching 3.0 innings with six hits given up, one walk and one strikeout.
  • MNU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an RBI walks and an RBI single.
  • SXU tied the game in their half of the 1st as Crane hit a leadoff bunt single and she scored on an error. O'Connor tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Pioneers retook the lead in the top of the 3rd off an RBI double and a squeeze bunt RBI.
  • Saint Xavier evened the game again in the bottom of the 3rd. Matlock hit an RBI infield single and O'Connor lined an RBI single to right field.
  • Wright gave the Cougars the lead with her RBI triple and she scored one at-bat later on Carr's RBI double to the gap in right center.
  • Antkiewicz worked a 1-2-3 top of the 7th to notch her first career win.
Saint Xavier (1-0/0-0 CCAC) continues play in the Dordt Dome Tournament on Saturday, February 8. SXU takes on No. 15 ranked Midland University (Neb.) at 3:00 pm, followed by a match-up with No. 11 Northwestern College (Iowa) at 5:00 pm.
