Yalayzah Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) collected five RBI on the day while going 3-for-6 at the plated to help lead the No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team (29-6/12-0 CCAC) to a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victories over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) posted a career-high 10 strikeouts in an 8-0 win in five innings in game one. Lovan and junior infielder
Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) both had two RBI to aid freshman pitcher
Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central), who threw a one-hitter with a career-best 10 strikeouts, three days after tossing a No-Hitter last Saturday.
Junior outfielder
Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) made program history, totaling four stolen bases in the doubleheader, becoming the first player for the Cougars to steal 50 bases in a season. She is now 50-for-52 in stolen base attempts on the year and is tied for No. 2 in the NAIA.
Game One:
- Lovan was 1-for-2, adding a sacrifice fly.
- Sophomore outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had two hits in two at-bats with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base.
- Crane went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three steals.
- Junior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
- Senior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Senior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
- Strand (12-4) logged her fourth shutout of the season, scattering three hits with two walks in 5.0 innings.
- Wroble scored Crane on a sac bunt and Lovan clubbed a two-run double to center field to put SXU up 3-0 in the bottom of the 1st.
- In the bottom of the 2nd, Wroble legged out an infield single to pick up an RBI to push the lead to 4-0.
- Matlock hit an RBI single and Lovan drove in Wroble on a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the 4th.
- Morgan ended the game in the bottom of the 5th by hitting an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Game Two:
- Wroble had three hits in three trips to the plate with two runs, two stolen bases and a walk.
- Matlock was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Lovan finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
- Carr and junior catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, respectively. Carr hit an RBI single, while Natanek belted an RBI double.
- O'Connor had a hit in two at-bats with a walk and a run scored.
- Junior infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) slugged a home run, adding two runs and a steal while going 1-for-3.
- Antkiewicz recorded her second consecutive shutout, walking one batter, for her fourth shutout of the year. He lone hit allowed came after she initially posted a strikeout to end the top of the 1st, however she was called for an illegal pitch, and she gave up a base hit two pitches later.
- Saint Xavier plated four runs in the bottom of the 1st. Matlock hit an RBI single and an error allowed another run to score on the play, Lovan had an RBI base hit and Carr lined an RBI single back up the middle of the infield.
- In the bottom of the 6th, Wright smacked her second home run of the season to right center field to fuel a six-run frame. Crane hit a 'Little League Home Run' as she hit an infield single and an error brought in two runs, O'Connor sliced a two-run base hit through the left side of the infield and Lovan laced an RBI single to center field.
- Natanek capped the scoring with an RBI double to the gap in right center field in the bottom of the 4th.
No. 19 Saint Xavier (29-6/12-0 CCAC) travels to Judson University (Ill.) for a CCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
