Strand Tosses One-Hitter in 8-0 Victory for No. 18 SXU

Crown Point, Ind. – Sophomore pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) carried a no-hitter into the top of the 5th before allowing a lead-off single, however she retired the next three batters to help the No. 18 ranked and top-seeded Saint Xavier University softball team (34-6/16-0 CCAC) to an 8-0 victory in five innings over Indiana University South Bend to start competition in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at the Crown Point Sportsplex in Crown Point, Ind. The tournament was delayed a day due to rain. Sophomore outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base and junior designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) ripped a two-run triple. SXU advances to the winner's bracket semifinal on Saturday.
  • Junior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) was 2-for-3 as well, scoring two runs.
  • Senior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
  • Junior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) stole two bases, scored two runs while going 1-for-1.
  • Junior infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had a hit in three at-bats with an RBI.
  • Junior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Freshman infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) went 1-for-2 with two runs.
  • Strand (15-4) issued two walks and tallied three strikeouts.
  • In the bottom of the 1st Crane stole home and Becker sliced a two-run triple to right field.
  • An error in the bottom of the 2nd allowed Goodwin to score to make the score 4-0.
  • Carr pushed the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, Wroble lined a two-run single back up the middle and Wright drove in a run on an RBI groundout.
No. 18 Saint Xavier (34-6/16-0 CCAC) plays No. 3 St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Saturday May 3 in the CCAC Tournament Semifinals. The game is slated for a 3:00 pm start in Crown Point, Ind.
