Casas Drives in Five, No. 23 Saint Xavier Swept by No. 5 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS – Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) collected five RBI on the day, including four in game one, however the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team (7-5/0-0 CCAC) lost in a non-conference doubleheader to No. 5 Marian University (Ind.) Friday afternoon at the Marian Softball Diamond in Indianapolis, Ind. Casas hit her second home run of the season in an 11-8 loss in game one. Senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) drove in a pair of runs and Casas tacked on her fifth RBI of the day in a 5-3 setback in game two.

Game One:
  • Casas went 2-for-4 overall.
  • Matlock finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) was 2-for-4 as well with a double.
  • Senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) hit an RBI double while going 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore designated player Isabelle Poortenga (Dyer, Ind./Lewis/Lake Central) tripled in two at-bats with a run.
  • Junior infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) collected an RBI and a stolen base, finishing 1-for-5 at the plate.
  • Junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) took the loss (3-3) after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs, three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) worked 3.1 innings of relief, surrendering seven hits, six earned runs, three walks and posting a strikeout.
  • came away with the win (3-1) after pitching 5.0 innings with six hits, two earned runs, two walks and a strikeout.
  • SXU plated four runs in the top of the 2nd. O'Connor lined an RBI double, Wroble picked up an RBI on an error with another run scoring on the play, and Casas belted an RBI single.
  • The Knights responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI triple, an RBI double, two RBI base hits and a run crossing on a wild pitch.
  • MU extended its lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the 4th with a pair of RBI doubles and a pair of RBI singles.
  • Casas slugged a three-run home run over the wall in centerfield to cut the deficit to 9-7 in the top of the 6th.
  • Marian added a two-run double in the bottom of the 6th.
  • In the top of the 7th, Poortenga legged out a triple and she scored on an RBI single off the bat of Matlock.
Game Two:
  • Senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) was 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
  • Wroble finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a steal.
  • Matlock clubbed a two-run double, going 1-for-3.
  • Casas went 1-for-3 as well with an RBI.
  • Junior designated player Yalayzah Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) doubled while going 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) threw 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned), three walks and logging a strikeout in the defeat (3-2).
  • Strand threw 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, issuing a walk.
  • Matlock put SXU up 2-0 in the top of the 1st when she sliced a two-run double to leftfield.
  • A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and a passed ball allowed the Knights to tie the game in the bottom of the 1st.
  • In the bottom of the 2nd, a wild pitch gave MU a 3-2 lead.
  • Casas plated Crane with an RBI groundout to re-tie the game in the top of the 3rd.
  • Marian hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the 4th.
No. 23 Saint Xavier (7-5/0-0 CCAC) travels to Mobile, Ala. to play No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett University at University of Mobile in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 5. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm first-pitch.
