No. 23 SXU Softball Clipped by No. 15 Grand View

Des Moines, Iowa – The No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team (37-12/26-1 CCAC) wrapped up the regular season, falling in a doubleheader sweep to No. 15 Grand View University (Iowa) Sunday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa. Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) smacked a bases-clearing double in a 7-4 loss in game one. Casas now has 78 RBI on the season, six away from breaking the team's single season record of 82 set by 2006 NAIA Softball Player of the Year Colleen Kilduff (2003-2006). Senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) hit an RBI single in the second game, however the Cougars lost by a score of 3-2.

Game One:
  • Casas was 1-for-4 overall with a run scored.
  • O'Connor went 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a pair of walks.
  • Junior infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had two hits in four at-bats with a run and a stolen base.
  • Senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) had a hit from the leadoff spot with a run scored and a steal, going 1-for-4.
  • Senior catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) had no official at-bats, collecting two walks.
  • Senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) also walked twice, adding a run and finishing 0-for-2 at the plate.
  • Junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Louis/Evergreen Park) went the distance (18-7), giving up nine hits, seven runs (six earned), with three walks and five strikeouts.
  • The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on a two-run home run.
  • SXU rallied for four runs in the top of the 3rd to take the lead. Casas sliced a three-run double to left, and she scored on O'Connor's team-leading 18th double of the season.
  • GVU tied the game in the bottom of the 4th on a sacrifice fly and an RBI base hit.
  • Grand View took the lead in the bottom of the 5th on a solo home run, and they added two runs in the bottom of the 6th off an RBI double and a Saint Xavier error.
Game Two:
  • Matlock went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
  • O'Connor drove in her 50th run of the year, going 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore outfielder Natalie Gomez (Oak Forest, Ill./Lewis/Tinley Park) doubled, also finishing 1-for-3.
  • Crane nabbed her NAIA-leading 86th base with a run scored, while going 1-for-4.
  • Sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) threw her 10th complete game of the year, scattering four hits with three earned runs and four walks to drop her record to 14-4 in the circle.
  • An error brought in Crane and O'Connor lined an RBI single back up the middle to put the Cougars up 2-0 in the top of the 1st.
  • The Vikings got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 2nd. They tied the game with a home run in the bottom of the 3rd, and belted another homer to go up 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th.
  • SXU had the tying run on second after Crane had a two-out base hit, and she stole second, however a ground ball back to the pitcher in the next at-bat ended the game.
No. 23 Saint Xavier (37-12/26-1 CCAC) gears up for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament that begins on Thursday, April 30 in Crown Point, Ind. The Cougars seek their sixth consecutive tournament title. Time and opponent are TBA for the double-elimination tournament.
