No. 11 Saint Xavier Takes Down St. Ambrose, 31-14

CHICAGO – No. 11 Saint Xavier University football (8-2, 6-0 MSFA Midwest) extended its winning streak to eight games after a 31-14 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League contest on a windy Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Junior wide receiver Kyle Quinn (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) caught four passes for 69 yards and had a career-best two touchdown receptions, coming on fourth down on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. Freshman running back Mario Price (Chicago Heights, Ill./Calumet New Tech) ran for a career-high 147 yards on 14 carries, including a 79-yard run in the 1st quarter.

  • Junior quarterback Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) threw for 272 yards and went 23-for-35 with three touchdown passes on the afternoon.
  • Senior wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) had a team-high seven receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. He also had two kick returns for 73 yards, three punt returns for 18 yards and had a punt that went out-of-bounds at the one-yard line that traveled 41 yards.
  • Sophomore running back Jessi Plunkett (Evergreen Park, Ill./College of DuPage/Brother Rice) ran for 55 yards on 12 rushing attempts.
  • Junior kicker Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 4-for-4 on extra point attempts, was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts and had six kickoffs for 316 yards and two touchbacks.
  • Junior defensive back Ron Carroll (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) led the SXU defense with nine tackles (five solos) and had 0.5 tackles for loss for one yard.
  • Senior linebacker Peyton Nigro (Mokena, Ill./Concordia-St. Paul/Lincoln-Way Central) recorded eight tackles (two solos) and 2.0 tackles for loss for four yards, while junior linebacker Finn Brandon (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) also had eight stops (three solos), along with 1.0 tackle for loss for one yard and a pass breakup.
  • The Cougars scored on the opening drive, going 46 yards on seven plays and Ross found Pringle for a five-yard touchdown pass at the 10:58 mark.
  • The Fighting Bees tied the game with a 24-yard touchdown pass, one play after Saint Xavier went three-and-out, with 2:45 left in the opening frame.
  • Benes kicked a 24-yard field goal ending a nine-play, 49-yard drive midway through the second quarter to put SXU up 10-7.
  • Ross connected with Quinn on 4th and 13 on the next possession for a 26-yard catch and run to go up 17-7 with 4:17 remaining in the first half.
  • Ross threw to Quinn on 4th and 10 with :48 left in the second quarter for a 30-yard touchdown pass to head into halftime with a 24-7 advantage.
  • SAU took advantage of a Cougar turnover and rushed in from eight yards out to cut the deficit to 24-14 at the 12:32 mark of the third period.
  • Junior linebacker Ryan Fitzgerald (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 14-yard rushing touchdown on 3rd and two to cap the scoring with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter. He was also a force defensively, racking up five tackles (one solo) mainly on special teams.

No. 11 Saint Xavier (8-2/6-0 MSFA) hosts 'Senior Day' on Saturday, November 12 before they take on No. 25 University of St. Francis at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm kickoff and the winner claims the MSFA Midwest League Title.
