Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) set a career-high with five touchdown passes and finished the game 27-for-33 for 288 yards with an interception to help lead No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University football (5-3, 3-0 MSFA Midwest) to a 38-13 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) action Saturday afternoon at Bush Stadium in Davenport, Iowa. The five touchdown passes by Ross are the most by an SXU quarterback since former standout Justin Hunniford (2017-18) had six in a 49-36 road win over Taylor University (Ind.) in a MSFA crossover on September 29, 2018.
- Graduate student wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) caught eight passes for 156 yards and tied his career-best with three touchdown receptions. He also hauled in three touchdowns last season in a 35-6 victory at Trinity International University (Ill.) on October 22, 2022. Pringle added four punt returns for 131 yards, including a 50-yard return. It was the longest punt return since Nick Czeszewski (2016-19) had a 56-yard return at TIU on October 13, 2018.
- Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ronnie Foster (Peoria Heights, Ill./Peoria Heights) made six receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns, the first scores in his collegiate career.
- Sophomore running back Tyreese Lee (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Eisenhower) led the ground attack with nine carries for 38 yards.
- Senior kicker Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 5-for-5 on extra point attempts, and he booted a 21-yard field goal.
- Senior defensive lineman Juabarey Anderson (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) had a team-high tying six tackles (four solos) with 2.5 tackles for loss (TFL) and 1.5 sacks.
- Senior defensive lineman Nico Uriarte (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also had six tackles with 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks.
- Junior defensive lineman Marcus Griffin (Chicago, Ill./Grand Valley State/Nazareth Academy) racked up five tackles and 3.0 sacks. The most since Jaleel Holloway (2018-19,21-22) had 3.5 sacks vs. Missour Baptist University on September 8, 2018.
- Overall, the Saint Xavier defense totaled 10.0 sacks on the afternoon for 47 yards tying the mark for most sacks in a game when the Cougar defense had 10.0 in a 52-10 victory over Lambuth University (Tenn.) in the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals on November 28, 2009.
- Sophomore linebacker Carter Wynn (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) posted three tackles, 1.0 sack and a forced fumble, while senior defensive back Kevin Countryman (Morris, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a tackle, a pass breakup and an interception returned for 51 yards.
- Ross connected with Pringle on a 43-yard strike to open the scoring at the 8:04 mark of the first quarter.
- A 19-yard pass from Ross to Foster made it 14-0 with 2:30 to go in the first period that was set up by Pringle's 50-yard punt return.
- The Fighting Bees responded on the next possession, going 75 yards on four plays to cut the deficit in half on a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the first frame.
- Ross found Pringle for another long catch and run, this time on a 48-yard touchdown, to extend the lead to 21-7 with 11:28 left in the first half.
- Countryman snagged an interception and brought it back 51 yards to the St. Ambrose five-yard line. Two plays later Ross hit Foster for a 10-yard touchdown and SXU went into the locker room with a 28-7 lead at halftime.
- Benes capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive that took 6:22 off the clock with a 21-yard field goal to start the third quarter.
- Ross and Pringle hooked up for their third 40 plus yard touchdown of the afternoon, this time for 42 yards on the next drive to push the advantage to 38-7 with 3:32 left in the frame.
- SAU scored on a 47-yard catch and run late in the fourth quarter but had their two-point conversion attempt fail to cap the scoring.
No. 15 Saint Xavier (5-3/3-0 MSFA Midwest) hosts Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a MSFA Midwest League contest on Saturday, November 4 on 'Senior Day.' The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm kickoff.
