No. 15 SXU Football Celebrates Homecoming with a 58-6 Win

CHICAGO – The No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University football team (4-2, 2-0 MSFA Midwest) celebrated Homecoming with a 58-6 victory over Judson University (Ill.) on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. Senior quarterback Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) threw for a career-high 317 yards on 20-for-26 passing with four touchdowns, all in the first half. It was his fourth career 300-yard passing game. Junior defensive back Antonio Orozco (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) returned an interception 39 yards for his first collegiate touchdown, his second consecutive week with a takeaway, to highlight a defensive effort that held the Eagles to just 91 yards of total offense. The 52-point win is the largest margin of victory for SXU on Homecoming, surpassing the previous-best set on September 26, 2009, when they shut out former MSFA foe Quincy University (Ill.), 51-0. It was the highest scoring Homecoming game for Saint Xavier as well, also topping the 2009 squad's 51 points.
  • The Cougar offense churned out 496 yards of total offense and recorded 29 first downs.
  • Senior wide receiver Kyle Quinn (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had game-highs in receptions (five) and yards (98) and caught his third touchdown pass of the season.
  • Senior wide receiver Brandt Hixson (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) came away with two catches for 70 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown.
  • Graduate student wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) also had two receptions for 64 yards with a 45-yard touchdown catch.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Adam Alcantar (Chicago, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) hauled in four passes for 40 yards and recorded his first collegiate score.
  • Senior running back Amari Venerable (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) finished with a game-high 36 rushing yards and scored his team-leading fifth rushing touchdown. He also had a pair of receptions for 14 yards.
  • Redshirt freshman quarterback Dominic D'Ambrosio (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) was 5-for-6 passing for 55 yards. He added five carries for five yards with his first collegiate touchdown.
  • Sophomore linebacker Chris Swayne (LaSalle, Ill./LaSalle-Peru Township) posted a game-best eight tackles (five solos) with a sack for 11 yards and a quarterback hurry.
  • Senior linebacker Ryan Fitzgerald (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied six tackles (one solo), while Orozco registered a pair of tackles (one solo).
  • Ross found a wide-open Hixson for an over the shoulder catch in the middle of the field and Hixson raced into the end zone for a 48-yard score on SXU's opening possession at the 12:11 mark.
  • Saint Xavier used a 10-play, 70-yard drive on its next drive that resulted in a nine-yard strike from Ross to Quinn to make it 14-0 with 4:47 remaining in the opening period.
  • Alcantar made it 21-0 when he caught a three-yard pass from Ross in the back of the end zone while tight-roping the sideline with :01 left in the frame.
  • The Cougars used another extended drive, going 78 yards on 11 plays and was capped by Venerable's one-yard rushing touchdown for a 28-0 advantage with 9:39 left in the second quarter.
  • Ross connected with Pringle on the near sideline that resulted in a 45-yard catch and run for Pringle's team-leading sixth receiving touchdown at the 6:55 mark.
  • Senior kicker Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) booted a 37-yard field goal as the clock expired, ending a nine-play, 60-yard drive, for a 38-0 halftime lead. SXU scored on all six of their possessions in the first half.
  • Freshman wide receiver Quinn Callaghan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) took the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards to the end zone for his first collegiate score on his first collegiate kick return.
  • On JU's next possession, Orozco camped under a tipped pass in the secondary, that was batted at the line of scrimmage, and returned the interception 39 yards for the 'Pick Six' to extend the lead to 51-0 as the extra point attempt failed.
  • The Eagles scored on a two-yard touchdown run on the next drive, using 6:19 off the game clock, going 65 yards on 10 plays with 7:25 remaining in the third period.
  • D'Ambrosio recorded the final score of the afternoon, rushing from two yards out with 11:35 left in regulation.
No. 15 Saint Xavier (4-2/2-0 MSFA Midwest) hosts NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State University (Mich.) at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field on Saturday, October 14. The game is slated for a 12:00 pm kickoff.
