CHICAGO – Senior guard
Bethany Baldwin (Watersmeet, Mich./Finlandia/Triton/Watersmeet) recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with a season-high tying 20 points and a season-best 10 rebounds to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team (5-5, 4-1 CCAC) to a 77-70 victory over Indiana University Northwest in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ill. Baldwin was 7-for-13 from the field (53.8 percent), tied her season-high with five assists, came away with three steals and blocked a shot in 36 minutes of action.
- Junior forward Alyssa Crenshaw (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) shot at a 50.0 percent clip (6-for-12) and scored 16 points. She added nine points, three assists, two blocks and a pair of steals.
- Sophomore guard Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) knocked down 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and she totaled 15 points, along with four rebounds and an assist in 33 minutes of playing time.
- junior guard Aaliyahna Derrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek) dished out a game-best nine assists, the second straight game she had nine dimes, as well as seven points, three rebounds, two steals and a block.
- Sophomore center Eleanor Harris (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) collected eight points, five rebounds and she blocked three shots.
- The game was tied 21-21 after the first period with Crenshaw (six points) and Derrell (five points, three assists) pacing the Cougars. Both teams controlled the ball well as they combined for just three turnovers (two for SXU, one for IUN). Saint Xavier went 9-for-16 shooting (56.3 percent) and held the RedHawks to 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from the field. Overall, the score was tied nine times throughout the game with the lead changing hand three times.
- The Cougars started the second quarter on a 12-4 run, highlighted by an 7-0 burst with four points from Baldwin and a trey by Green to hold their largest lead of the game, 33-25, with 6:37 left in the half. Indiana Northwest battled back and tied the game, 36-36, at the 1:30 mark. Baldwin came away with a steal and gave SXU a two-point lead with :24 to go and the advantage would hold at the break. Baldwin was strong the period, totaling nine points, four rebounds and three steals.
- Baldwin drained a three to start the scoring in the second half off an assist from Derrell and Saint Xavier maintained the lead the remainder of the game. In the third quarter, Crenshaw scored six points and the Cougars shot 54.5 percent (6-for-11) in the frame. Green was tough down the stretch, sinking a pair of three-pointers and scoring seven points in the fourth period. Harris added four points and grabbed four of her five rebounds in the final quarter. SXU protected the three-point line well by holding the RedHawks to 20.8 percent (5-for-24) from deep and has now won four of their last five contests.
Saint Xavier (5-5/4-1 CCAC) takes on No. 13 Dakota State University (S.D.) in a non-conference matchup on Friday, December 29. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm tipoff.
