University Park, Ill. – A three-pointer as time expired proved to be the difference as Saint Xavier University men's basketball (2-5, 1-2 CCAC) lost to Governors State University (Ill.), 73-72, in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest Saturday afternoon in University Park, Ill. Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) broke a 70-70 tie with just :08 left in regulation coming out of a timeout before the game-winning shot by the Jaguars. Johnson finished the game with 20 points, shooting at a 61.5 percent clip (8-for-13), with a season-high seven assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
- Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) drained 5-of-7 three-point attempts, including a go-ahead trey with :52 second left in the second half. He added two assists, a rebound and a steal in 36 minutes of action.
- Junior forward Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Iowa City Liberty) pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds along with seven points and a blocked shot.
- Junior guard Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tallied seven points in 18 minutes off the bench. He also had three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
- Saint Xavier shot well in the game, going 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field and went 13-for-28 from beyond the arc (46.4 percent). They finished 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) from the foul line.
- The game was back-and-forth before Governors State built an 11-point lead off of a 7-0 run midway through the first half, 24-13. GSU pushed its lead to 12 points, 36-24, after a pair of free throws with 4:09 to go in the frame. The Cougars rallied back and cut the deficit to just five, 39-34, after the used a 10-3 run before heading into the locker room down 41-34. Johnson collected eight points, three assists and two rebounds in the first 20 minutes, while Hill chipped in six points.
- Johnson gave SXU its first lead of the contest at the 16:55 mark with a basket after he corralled a rebound on the other end of the court. He would grab another rebound and sink a layup just over eight minutes later to give Saint Xavier its largest lead, 59-53, with 8:06 left. The lead would trade hands the rest of the way before the game-winning three-pointer. Johnson went 5-for-7 from the field in the second period, scoring 12 points with five rebounds and four assists. Hill made 3-of-4 threes for nine points in the frame.
Saint Xavier (2-5, 1-2 CCAC) hosts Viterbo University (Wis.) in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, December 6 at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The game is slated for a 7:00 pm tipoff.
