Johnson & Ukiteyedi Lead SXU Past TCC, 83-72

Palos Heights, Ill. – Senior guard Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) recorded his second double-double of the season, finishing with 24 points and a season-high 13 rebounds and senior guard Steven Ukiteyedi (Gaitherburg, Md./Allegheny/UMBC/Quince Orchard) also posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds to help lead Saint Xavier University men's basketball (4-5, 2-2 CCAC) to an 83-72 road win over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup at DeVos Gymnasium in Palos Heights, Ill. Johnson was 7-for-14 from the field (50.0 percent) and 8-for-8 from the foul line along with four assists, a block and a steal. Ukiteyedi was 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) with four steals and three assists in 28 minutes off the bench.
  • Junior forward Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) also finished in double-figures with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting (55.6 percent) and he added five rebounds and three blocked shots.
  • Freshman forward James Stevenson (Sun River Terrace, Ill./Momence) collected nine points, two blocks, a rebound and a steal.
  • Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) added seven points, four steals, three rebounds and an assist.
  • SXU tied its season-high with 29 made field goals (29-for-57) and was 50.9 percent from the field. They also pulled down a season-best 42 rebounds and blocked a season-high six shots. It was also the third time this year that the Cougars have scored 80 or more points in a game and they are 3-0 in those games.
  • After falling behind 10-6 at the 13:20 mark, Johnson sank a three-pointer to spark a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to go up 18-10 midway through the half. They carried their largest lead, 38-24, just before halftime when Ukiteyedi came away with a steal and a fast break layup. He led Saint Xavier with nine points at the break along with seven rebounds and three steals. Brandon had eight points and four rebounds, while Johnson added seven points and four rebounds. SXU was tough defensively, holding TCC to just 28.6 percent (8-for-28) from the field and forcing 12 turnovers with seven steals.
  • The Cougars pushed its advantage to 23 points, 68-45, with 10:30 left in regulation on a three by freshman guard Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) set up by Johnson. Trinity Christian worked its way back, going on a 25-6 run, to cut the deficit to 76-70 with 1:29 to go. Johnson came up with a steal and found Brandon for a basket in the paint at the :49 mark and Saint Xavier closed the game out with free throws to pull away for the CCAC victory. Johnson scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half and he grabbed nine rebounds. Ukiteyedi had eight points and six rebounds, while Brandon added eight points. SXU shot 50.0 percent (13-for-26) from the field in the second half and shot at an 84.2 percent clip (16-for-19) from the free throw line.
Saint Xavier (4-5, 2-2 CCAC) travels to Goshen, Ind. to play Goshen College (Ind.) in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, December 12. The game is slated for a 2:00 pm central start.
