Saint Xavier Splits DH with Trinity Christian, Takes Series

Palos Heights, Ill. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (25-23/17-9 CCAC) won game one of their doubleheader with Trinity Christian College (Ill.) by a score of 6-1, however they lost game two of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup by a 5-3 margin Saturday afternoon at the Schaaf Complex in Palos Heights, Ill. Junior pitcher Caleb Ziehr (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) pitched 5.0 strong innings with just four hits allowed, one run and had five strikeouts to move his record to 3-0 on the season in game one. Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) and senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) each collected three hits with an RBI in game two. SXU wins the season series, 2-1, after winning 12-8 on Friday afternoon.
Game One:
  • Senior outfielder Sean Haddlesey (Ann Arbor, Mich./Albion/Skyline) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a triple and a run scored.
  • Senior designated hitter Sam Ryan (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
  • Junior catcher Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) finished 3-for-3 and had a stolen base.
  • Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) had two hits in four at-bats with an RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) worked the final 2.0 innings and gave up a hit and a walk.
  • TCC got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 1st.
  • Haddlesey gave the Cougars the lead with a two-run single back up the middle and Ryan added an RBI single for a 3-1 advantage in the top of the 2nd.
  • Dowling legged out an RBI infield single in the top of the 4th.
  • Ryan hit a sac fly in the top of the 6th, as did Zarrillo in the top of the 7th.
Game Two:
  • Zarrillo was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Hayes went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a double and a run scored.
  • Haddlesey had two hits in four at-bats and a run and Dowling finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) suffered the loss (3-6) after going 5.2 innings with four hits allowed, five runs (four earned), two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Junior Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) pitched an inning, giving up three hits and a walk.
  • Junior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) finished the game with 1.1 innings of relief and allowed just one hit.
  • The Trolls hit an RBI double and drove in a run off of an SXU error to go up 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • Zarrillo hit an RBI single in the top of the 4th to cut the lead in half.
  • Hayes split the gap in right center with an RBI double and Orzech gave Saint Xavier the lead on an RBI groundout in the top of the 5th.
  • Trinity Christian retied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th and took the lead for good with a two-run triple.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the 7th with one out but were unable to score.
Saint Xavier (25-23/17-9 CCAC) is scheduled to conclude its suspended game from March 26 with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Sunday, April 30 at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field. The game is slated to resume in the bottom of the 5th with one out, a runner of the first and SAU holding a 7-3 lead.
