SXU Falls to St. Ambrose, 12-10, in Resumption of Delayed Game

CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (25-24/17-10 CCAC) officially concluded their regular season, falling 12-10 to St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in a resumption of their game that was suspended in the bottom of the 5th due to heavy rain and lightning on Sunday, March 26. Senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) was one of four players for SXU to collect two RBI in the game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior pitcher Brendan Gill (Evergreen Park, Ill./Moraine Valley/Mount Carmel) was the hard luck loser (0-1) after pitching an inning with one hit, three runs, two walks and a strikeout. The Cougars finished in third place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and now prepare for the upcoming CCAC Baseball Tournament that is set to begin on Thursday, May 4 in Joliet, Ill.
  • Senior infielder Declan Smyth (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Central/Evergreen Park) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
  • Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
  • Junior designated hitter Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) subbed in and finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a run.
  • Junior outfielder Daniel Barrios (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) collected two hits in three at-bats with two doubles, an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
  • Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) made the start last month and tossed 4.1 innings with six hits, seven runs (six earned), three walks and three strikeouts.
  • Freshman Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) was on the mound when the game was suspended and resumed pitching Sunday afternoon. He threw 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Ryan Martin (Whitestone, N.Y./Iowa/St. Francis Prep) worked an inning with one hit, two runs and a walk.
  • Junior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) pitched the 8th and recorded a strikeout.
  • From the start of the game on March 26, Declan Smyth hit a two-run single and senior infielder Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill./NC Central/DuPage/South Suburban/Evergreen Park) had an RBI single to put Saint Xavier up 3-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • The Fighting Bees tied the game in the top of the 4th on a two-run base hit and a balk.
  • SAU extended its lead to 7-3 in the top of the 5th on a passed ball that scored a run, a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch that brought a run in and an RBI groundout.
  • In resumed action this afternoon, SXU started a six-run rally, all with two outs in the bottom of the 5th. Orzech kept a two-run double fair down the first base line, Hayes lined a two-run single back up the middle and Zarrillo sliced a two-run base hit to the gap in right center to go ahead 9-7.
  • St. Ambrose tied the game in the top of the top of the 7th with a two-run home run over the wall in left center.
  • Barrios flared a two-out RBI double into 'no-man's land', landing a ball between the right fielder, center fielder and second baseman in the gap in right center to put the Cougars up 10-9 in the bottom of the 7th.
  • After recording a groundout to start the top of the 9th, the Fighting Bees drew a pair of walks and took the lead with a three-run home run to right field.
Saint Xavier (25-24/17-10 CCAC) travels to Duly Health and Care Field in Joliet, Ill. to begin play in the double-elimination CCAC Tournament on Thursday, May 4. Time and opponent will be released later in the week by the league office.
