Barragan Converts Late PK in 2-2 Draw for SXU at Cornerstone

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Senior midfielder Fernando Barragan (Burbank, Ill./Moraine Valley/Reavis) continued his strong play to start the season as he recorded the game-tying goal in the 86th minute off a penalty kick and added an assist in a 2-2 tie for Saint Xavier University men's soccer (1-0-3, 0-0 CCAC) with host Cornerstone University (Mich.) Tuesday evening at the CU Soccer Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. Freshman midfielder Eduardo Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./UIC College Prep) tallied his first collegiate goal for the Cougars, while sophomore goalkeeper Osvaldo Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./Goode STEM Academy) made the start in net and posted two saves for SXU.
  • Barragan finished with a team-high three shot attempts, along with two shots on goal as he played the full 90 minutes.
  • Ramirez had a pair of shot attempts and two shots on goal in 29 minutes of action off the bench.
  • Freshman midfielder Irving Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) registered two shot attempts and two shots on goal.
  • Both teams were limited to two shots in the first 45 minutes of play as the score two level at halftime at 0-0.
  • The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 60th minute to break the tie.
  • Ramirez evened the score in the 67th minute off a pass from Barragan.
  • CU regained the advantage in the 71st minute on an unassisted tally.
  • Saint Xavier went on the offensive looking for the equalizer, getting four shot attempts, including two on goal in the 85th and 86th minute before a foul was called inside the 18-yard box. Barragan converted the penalty kick for his team-leading third goal of the season.
Saint Xavier (1-0-3/0-0 CCAC) travels to Upland, Ind. to face Taylor University on Wednesday, September 6. The match is slated for a 5:00 pm central start.
