CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (6-6, 4-1 CCAC) rallied back from an 2-0 deficit to pull the 'reverse sweep' in a wild five-set victory (23-25,17-26,26-24,25-6,18-16) over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Tuesday evening in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. They totaled a season-high 14 service aces, and it was the third consecutive match that they had 10 or more aces. SXU trailed 23-21 in the third set and used double blocks from senior middle blocker
Courtney Hunter (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and junior libero/setter
Kaleigh Ritter (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and another double block by Ritter and sophomore middle blocker
Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), followed by kills from junior outside hitter
Connie LeBel (Crestwood, Ill./DePaul/Ferris State/Mother McAuley) to go up 24-23. The Trolls got a kill, however the followed that with a service error and Lebel posted a kill to take the set, 26-24.
The Cougars went on an incredible run in the fourth set. With the set tied at 1-1 LeBel held serve to build a 17-1 lead, including a run of six consecutive service aces, and SXU would take the frame by a decisive 25-6 win. Saint Xavier looked to carry the momentum over into the final set and built a 7-4 lead after a kill by Hunter forced a Trinity Christian timeout. TCC rallied back to even the match 8-8 before a service error gave the Cougars a 9-8 lead. The Trolls used five kills and a Saint Xavier attack error to serve match point, 14-9. Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) recorded the 14
th ace of the evening for the Cougars, LeBel squared the match and Hunter put SXU on top, 15-14, with back-to-back kills. TCC evened the match with a kill, committed a ball handling error and another kill to square the match at 16-16. LeBel would post consecutive kills to give Saint Xavier a thrilling 18-16 fifth set win.
- LeBel nearly had a triple-double, finishing with a match-best 20 kills along with 12 digs, nine aces, an assist and a block. Her nine service aces are the most by a Cougar since Melissa Ferguson (1999-02) had an impressive 14 aces at Judson University (Ill.) on October 9, 2001. Amy Horwath (1994-97) holds the program record with 15 service aces at University of Wisconsin-Parkside on October 2, 1996.
- Ritter also recorded a double-double with a match-high tying 20 digs and 19 assists. She also had two aces, two blocks and a kill.
- Sophomore outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) tallied 11 kills, six digs and two block assists.
- Junior opposite hitter Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Lourdes/Blissfield) was the third SXU player with double-digit kills, collecting 10. She also added two blocks (one solo).
- Freshman setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) registered 19 assists, eight digs and a block.
- Hunter posted six kills, four blocks, two digs and an assist, while DeHaan chipped in five digs and two aces.
- Grochola came away with four blocks (one solo), three kills, an assist and a dig.
- Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Ariel Hoskin (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) took over the libero position in the third set and finished with 14 digs, four assists and a service ace.
Saint Xavier (6-6/4-1 CCAC) travels to Davenport, Iowa to take on St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in CCAC competition on Tuesday, September 26. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
