Ross & Pringle Lead No. 18 SXU Football Past Madonna, 31-7

CHICAGO – Senior quarterback Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 9-for-12 passing and graduate student wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) made two catches, both for touchdowns, and finished with 139 receiving yards to help guide the No. 18 ranked Saint Xavier University football team (2-2, 0-0 MSFA Midwest) to a 31-7 Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover victory over Madonna University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars netted 328 yards of total offense and averaged 6.3 yards per play to wrap up non-conference play.
 
  • Senior running back Amari Venerable (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) posted seven carries for 56 yards with a rushing touchdown.
  • Senior wide receiver Brandt Hixson (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) made a pair of receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown.
  • Senior kicker Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 4-for-4 on PAT attempts and booted a 38-yard field goal.
  • Senior wide receiver/punter Joe Polselli (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Rita) launched four punts for 195 with an average of 48.8 per punt. He had a season-long 58-yard punt and placed three punts inside the 20.
  • Sophomore linebacker Terry Elias (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) recorded a team-best 10 tackles, his third consecutive game with 10 or more stops, and had a tackle for loss (TFL) for five yards.
  • Sophomore defensive lineman Justin Yeazell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) made five tackles, 3.0 TFL's for 11 yards and 2.5 sacks for nine yards.
  • Senior defensive back Ron Carroll (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) tallied three tackles and came away with an interception that was returned 17 yards.
  • Senior linebacker Vince Clinite (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) had two solo tackles, including a forced fumble on special teams.
  • Freshman defensive back Tajhaun McClellan (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) added a tackle and a fumble recovery.
  • Saint Xavier opened the scoring just two plays into the game. Ross connected with Pringle for a 60-yard catch and run down the far sideline at the 14:16 mark of the opening quarter.
  • Carroll recorded his second interception of the year and Venerable would run up the middle from 19 yards out for a touchdown on the next play to push the lead to 14-0 with 10:03 left in the first period.
  • Clinite caused a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that McClellan pounced on at the Madonna 33-yardline. SXU would net three points on the possession, as Benes drilled a 38-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead midway through the quarter at 7:34.
  • The Cougars would force a punt and the Crusaders would down the ball at the five-yard line. Venerable picked up 16 yards on first down and Ross connected with Pringle again, this time for a 79-yard catch and run to extend the advantage to 24-0 at the 3:14 mark of the first quarter.  
  • The Saint Xavier defense caused MU to go four and out on the next drive and took over with 1:30 to go in the frame. SXU went 50 yards on five plays and capped the drive on a 29-yard pass from Ross to Hixson with 14:54 left in the second period.
  • Madonna went five plays and 79 yards to start the second half, using 2:28 off the clock and scored on a five-yard touchdown pass.
 No. 18 Saint Xavier (2-2, 0-0 MSFA Midwest) begins MFSA Midwest League play with a road game against No. 14 University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday, September 30 in Joliet, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
