Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) recorded his team-high tying fourth double-double of the year, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds to help give Saint Xavier University men's basketball (9-6, 4-3 CCAC) a 90-78 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road win over Indiana University South Bend Wednesday evening at the Student Activities Center in South Bend, Ind. Johnson added five assists and five rebounds, while Johnson was hot from three-point range by knocking down 5-of-10 attempts and he came away with three steals. The Cougars drained 14-of-32 three-point attempts (43.8 percent), the fifth time this season they have shot better than 40.0 percent from deep. It was also the sixth time that SXU has made 10 or more threes in a game this season.
- Freshman forward James Stevenson (Sun River Terrace, Ill./Momence) set a new career-high in points with 16 on 7-for-9 shooting from the field. He also had an assist, a rebound and a steal in 32 minutes on the court.
- Junior guard Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Richards) was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, finishing with nine points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench.
- Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) filled the box score with six assists, five points, four rebounds and four steals in 29 minutes of action.
- Freshman guard Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) scored seven points with two rebounds, while redshirt freshman guard Mason Kibelkis (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) chipped in five points and a steal.
- The first half was close throughout as IUSB held the largest lead of the frame, 21-17, at the 8:41 mark as both teams traded the lead seven times. The score was also tied four times in the first 20 minutes. Kibelkis gave SXU a slight 36-35 lead heading into halftime by making a pair of free throws with :03 to go. Johnson paced the offense as he had nine points and two assists at the break. Stevenson had seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in the half.
- Saint Xavier opened the second half with a three-pointer by Johnson and would push its advantage to 48-41 after a three by Brandon off a pass from Hill with 16:27 remaining. The Titans rallied to tie the game 55-55 using a 14-7 run over the next four minutes. Stevenson gave SXU the lead for good with a jumper at the 11:50 mark, sparking a 9-0 run to go up 64-55 at the midway point. The Cougars maintained a two-possession lead the rest of the way to secure the victory.
- Johnson scored 18 of his points in the second half and Brandon was tough in 19 minutes with 14 points and eight rebounds. He was 4-for-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the period. Stevenson also came through in the frame by making 4-of-5 shot attempts and scoring nine points.
Saint Xavier (9-6, 4-3 CCAC) travels to Whiting, Ind. to face Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a CCAC contest on Saturday, January 13. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm tipoff.
