CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University men's basketball team (11-6, 6-3 CCAC) made 4-of-6 foul shots in the final 17 seconds of regulation to hold off University of St. Francis (Ill.), 77-75, in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest Wednesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) was 1-for-2 and junior forward
Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) was 3-for-4 in that time frame. USF had a chance to tie the game with 0.3 seconds left by missing a foul shot, but the rebound and tip-in attempt missed allowing SXU to come away with the win.
- Senior guard Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) recorded his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with a game-best 26 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He also had three assists in 38 minutes of action.
- Brandon tallied 20 points, his third consecutive game with 20 or more points, along with eight rebounds and an assist. He was 7-for-13 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
- Freshman forward James Stevenson (Sun River Terrace, Ill./Momence) finished with 14 points, the third time in five games that he has scored in double-figures and fourth time overall this year. He added five rebounds, two steals and an assist.
- Streeter collected seven points in 36 minutes on the court, along with four rebounds, a block and a steal.
- Junior guard Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) added seven points, an assist, a block, a rebound and a steal in 33 minutes off the bench.
- The Fighting Saints jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening minutes before Ward tied the game, 10-10, on a three-pointer at the 15:03 mark. Midway through the half, Saint Xavier went on a 9-0 run over four minutes to go up 28-20 after Johnson scored on a fastbreak layup. St. Francis rallied back and the Cougars held a 34-31 lead at the break. Johnson had 13 points and seven rebounds heading in to the locker room, while Brandon had seven points and five boards.
- With the scored even at 40-40 with 17:56 remaining in regulation, SXU used an 11-0 run that was sparked by a jumper in the paint by Brandon. He (five points) and Stevenson (six points) led the way during that run, capped by a basket by Stevenson with 13:59 left. Brandon gave Saint Xavier its largest lead of the game, 54-42, with a three on an assist from Ward at the 12:57 mark. USF chipped away and made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three at 70-67 with 3:42 to go. Johnson made a jumper in the lane on the next possession and free throws would close out the contest. Both Brandon and Johnson tallied 13 points in the second half, respectively, and Stevenson added eight points and a pair of takeaways.
Saint Xavier (11-6, 6-3 CCAC) hosts No. 22 Olivet Nazarene University in CCAC action on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center on Saturday, January 20. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
