CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (15-10, 11-1 CCAC) rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to earn a five-set victory (25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12) over Indiana University South Bend in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Courtney Hunter (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) led the Cougars with 12 kills and freshman middle blocker
Carrington Smith (Flossmoor, Ill./Marian Catholic) tallied 11 kills on a stellar .476 attack percentage (11-1-21) were a force in the middle. The win pulls SXU within 0.5 games of first place and No.14 ranked Viterbo University (Wis.) and they move 3.0 games up on third place Judson University (Ill.) with two conference matches remaining for Saint Xavier.
- Hunter added a pair of digs, while Smith had two digs and a solo block.
- Redshirt junior setter Samantha Hovey (Mackinaw, Ill./Heartland/Dee-Mack) handed out 31 assist and she had 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) dished out 14 assists, her second-most of the year, with five digs.
- Junior outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) collected nine kills on a .364 attack percentage (9-1-22) and a dig.
- Junior middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) came away with eight kills, two blocks, a dig and a service ace.
- Redshirt junior libero Avanna Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) posted a match-best 21 digs, while adding four assists and two aces.
- Sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Born (Plainfield, Ill./Oswego East) recorded a season-best five kills and she added a dig.
- Senior right side/outside hitter Brittany Samars (Bridgeview, Ill./Millikin/Argo Community) had a season-high four kills, along with two blocks and two digs.
- Junior outside hitter Tara Glynn (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) also had a season-high in kills with three with a dig.
- Junior defensive specialist Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied nine digs and a service ace.
- Freshman defensive specialist Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) had five digs and junior defensive specialist Ariel Hoskin (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) added a pair of digs in the win.
Saint Xavier (15-10/11-1 CCAC) welcomes Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) to the Shannon Center for a CCAC match on Thursday, October 31. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
