Notre Dame, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University women's soccer (7-5-5, 5-3-3 CCAC) lost to Holy Cross College (Ind.), 3-3, 3-1 in penalty kicks in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at Saint Field in Notre Dame, Ind. It was the first time since November 5, 2010 that the Cougars had a match decided by penalty kicks when they lost to Trinity International University (Ill.) in the CCAC Quarterfinals, 3-2, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. It was the first time SXU played in overtime since October 12, 2021, a 0-0 draw vs. Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), after the NAIA rule that matches only go to overtime in postseason competition was established before the 2022 season.
- Senior midfielder Louisa Schreiber (Bonndorf, Germany/Morton/Hans-Thoma-Schule) led Saint Xavier with four shot attempts with one shot on goal and she recorded an assist.
- Sophomore forward Alex Jonaitis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) recorded three shot attempts, two shots on goal and an assist while playing all 110 minutes.
- Junior midfielder Hope Lewis (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) registered a pair of shots on goal and she also had an assist.
- Junior midfielder Veronica Davila (Bourbonnais, Ill./Governors State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
- Senior defender/midfielder Jacqueline Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./Curie) netted her first goal of the season.
- Junior midfielder Hailey Henry (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah Community) tallied her second goal of the season for the Cougars.
- Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Eden Suda (Western Springs, Ill./Governors State/Lyons Township) made her seventh start of the season in goal and finished with two saves.
- The match was scoreless at halftime as SXU held a 6-1 shot advantage.
- The Saints scored first in the 71st minute after Suda made a save on a penalty kick attempt, however she couldn't control the rebound.
- Davila squared the match at 1-1 nearly 45 seconds later in the 73rd minute off of a pass from Lewis.
- Almost 90 seconds later, HCC retook the lead with a goal in the 74th minute.
- Gonzalez evened the match at 2-2 when she found the back of the net on an assist from a corner kick by Schreiber in the 84th minute.
- In the 86th minute, Henry took a pass from Jonaitis and gave Saint Xavier its first lead of the contest, 3-2.
- Holy Cross quickly tied the match in the 87th minute on a play set up by a yellow card by the Cougars.
- SXU had a pair of scoring chances turned away in the 97th and 99th minutes, respectively and the held a 4-2 shot advantage in the first overtime.
- Neither team was able to manufacture much offense in the second overtime period as the Saint had the lone shot attempt in the 105th minute.
- In the penalty kick round, Davila was the first to go and she converted for a 1-0 lead. The next three tries by Saint Xavier failed, while HCC made three of its four attempts to advance to the CCAC Tournament Semifinals.
