CHICAGO – The No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (5-5/3-0 CCAC) defeated St. Ambrose University (Iowa) 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest Saturday morning in the first match of the SXU Tri-Match on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. In the second match of the day, NCAA Division III Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) took down the Fighting Bees in four sets (25-11, 24-26, 25-18, 25-22). The Cougars concluded the Tri-Match with a four-set triumph (25-15, 25-17, 18-25, 25-12) over the Raiders.
Match One:
- Junior outside hitter Kegan Olig (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) posted a match-high 12 kills on a .348 attack percentage (12-4-23), along with three service aces, two digs and a block.
- Fifth-year senior setter Christian Oviedo (Brea, Calif./Concordia-Irvine/Servite) handed out 31 assists, with five digs, two aces and a block.
- Redshirt junior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) finished with eight kills on a .357 attack percentage (8-3-14), three service aces, a block and a dig.
- Junior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) had six kills, five digs, an ace and a solo block.
- Senior middle blocker Jack McClain (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) recorded five kills, two blocks (one solo) and two digs.
- Senior middle blocker John Glennon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) collected five kills, three blocks (one solo) and an assist.
- Sophomore libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) registered a match-best six digs and a service ace.
- Freshman outside hitter Joey Glennon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made his collegiate debut and he came away with two digs.
- Sophomore outside hitter Aedan Vanegas (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) added a dig and a kill, while freshman libero Sam Trushel (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) also made his collegiate debut with a pair of receptions.
Match Two:
- Sophomore outside hitter Oskar Krzyzak (Nowy Sacz, Poland/Szkota Mistrzostwa Sportowego Rzeszów) tallied a season-high 18 kills on a .371 attack percentage (18-5-35) along with six digs, four blocks and an ace.
- Sophomore outside hitter Jan Lopuch (Krakow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Sportowego) totaled 16 kills on a stellar .556 attack percentage (16-1-27), two assists and two digs.
- Junior outside hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 10 kills. He also had five service aces, three assists and two blocks.
- Freshman setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) posted 41 assists, the third match this season that he has had 40 or more assists. He also had a career-high nine digs and an ace.
- Fifth-year senior middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was tough at the net with seven blocks (two solos). He added four kills, two digs and two service aces.
- Velez scooped up a match-best 13 digs and he came away with four assists.
No. 13 Saint Xavier (5-5/0-0 CCAC) makes the short trip to take on NCAA Division III Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Ill. on Tuesday, February 20. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
