Summers Shines for No. 24 SXU at SAU Tournament

Davenport, Iowa – Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) collected three wins int the circle to help No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University softball (6-2/0-0 CCAC) go 3-1 this weekend at the St. Ambrose University Dome Tournament in Davenport, Iowa on Saturday and Sunday. She allowed just three hits with a career-best 13 strikeouts and senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) drove in both runs in a 2-1 win over William Penn University (Iowa). Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) had an RBI single in a 6-1 setback to Madonna University (Mich.). On Sunday, Reese collected four RBI and Summers picked up the win in relief in a 9-2 triumph over Mount Marty University (S.D.). Summers and junior Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) combined to no-hit the Lancers, the first combined no-hitter for SXU since March 4, 2021, when Summers and former NAIA All-American Allison Golic (2018-21) paired up to throw the only combined Perfect Game in team history against Lawrence Tech University (Mich.). Summer threw a five-hit shutout and SXU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 6th for a 3-0 victory.

Game One:
  • Reese went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was 2-for-3 as well, she also swiped three bases and scored two runs.
  • The final line for Summers (2-2) was 7.0 innings, three hits and one earned run.
  • Reese lined an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the 1st to open the scoring and she added an RBI base hit to center in the bottom of the 5th.
  • WPU scored its lone run on an error in the top of the 6th.
  • Summers had a strikeout in each inning and struck out the side in the top of the 2nd and the top of the 7th.
Game Two:
  • Freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) collected two hits in four at-bats from the leadoff spot.
  • Junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Carr was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Claas (2-1) suffered the loss, pitching a complete game by going 6.0 innings with six hits, six earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
  • The Crusaders plated four runs in the bottom of the 1st with three RBI doubles, the last being a two-run double with two outs.
  • Carr drove in Morgan on an RBI single to center in the top of the 4th.
  • MU added a run in the bottom of the 5th on a sacrifice fly and another run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Three:
  • Wroble went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a stolen base and a walk.
  • Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) tied the school record for walks, drawing four, and finished 0-for-1 with two runs. She the first Cougar since Frankie Demack (2016-19) had four walks in a 13-inning contest against Judson University (Ill.) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament on May 3, 2018. It was the first time in a seven-inning game that an SXU batter had four walks when Caroline Kuzel (2015-18) did so against Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) on March 7, 2016 during their Spring Break trip. Courtney Murphy (2008-11) is the other Saint Xavier player to collect four walks, doing it twice on April 20, 2008, and again on May 7, 2010.
  • Reese had four RBI after going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run.
  • Carr hit a double in three at-bats with two RBI.
  • Freshman utility player Yalitza Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) posted her first collegiate hit as a pinch hitter, driving two runs.
  • Freshman outfielder Megan Kirnbauer (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) collected her first collegiate hit and scored a run in a pinch-hitting opportunity.
  • Claas made the start and went 3.1 innings with no hits, two runs (one earned), six walks and four strikeouts.
  • Summers (3-2) finished the game by throwing 3.2 innings of relief with no-hits and striking out eight batters.
  • Reese hit an RBI single in the top of the 1st and an error allowed another run to score. Carr split the gap in right center for a two-run double to give the Cougars a 4-0 advantage.
  • MMU got on the board in the bottom half of the inning as a run scored on an error. They added a run in the bottom of the 2nd by drawing a bases loaded walk.
  • Lovan lined a two-run single to left field in the top of the 6th to push the lead to 6-2.
  • Wright hit an RBI single and Reese followed with a two-run base hit up the middle to cap the scoring in the top of the 7th.
Game Four:
  • Carr was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
  • Wright went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, an RBI and a walk.
  • Reese also finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Summers (4-2) logged her second shutout of the season after 7.0 innings of work with five hits surrendered and three strikeouts.
  • The game was scoreless until Wright laced a two-out RBI single to score Morgan in the bottom of the 6th. Reese followed with an RBI base hit and Carr legged out an RBI triple that was hit to the gap in right center.
No. 24 Saint Xavier (6-2/0-0 CCAC) travels to Fort Wayne, Ind. to play Indiana Tech University in a doubleheader on Friday, February 24. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm central.
