CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University men's basketball team (16-11, 11-8 CCAC) made five of their six foul shots in the final minute of regulation to pull away for a 64-60 victory on 'Senior Night' over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) finished the game by recording his fifth double-double of the year with a game-high and season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. He added two steals and a blocked shot, while sinking two foul shots with just :05 left to seal the win. Prior to the game a pair of seniors were honored: senior guard
Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) and senior forward
Jack Walsh (Orland Park, Ill./Elmhurst/Sandburg).
At halftime, three members from the cheerleading team were also recognized on 'Senior Night'. Senior base Hannah Davis (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park), senior flyer Taylor Leary (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and senior base Gabriella Wuerfl (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East).
- Johnson also finished in double-figures with 16 points, along with nine rebounds, two assists and a steal.
- Freshman forward James Stevenson (Sun River Terrace, Ill./Momence) scored six points and pulled down six rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. He also had two blocks, two steals and an assist.
- Redshirt freshman guard Mason Kibelkis (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) also had six points, sinking two of his three three-point attempts, and he added an assist.
- Freshman guard Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) tallied five points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
- Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) came away with four points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
- Junior Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) chipped in three points, two rebounds and two steals.
- Saint Xavier controlled the pace in the first half, holding a 32-19 lead at the break. Brandon had 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting and was 4-or-6 from beyond the arc with seven rebounds. Johnson had seven points and six rebounds. The Cougar defense limited SAU to 24.1 percent from the field (7-for-29) and just 14.3 percent (2-for-14) from deep.
- St. Ambrose worked its way back into the game and tied the score at 43-43 with 11:18 left in the second half. The score see-sawed back and forth over the next five minutes before Hill made a pair of free throws to put SXU up 51-50 at the 6:30 mark. The Fighting Bees retook the lead by making two foul shots, 55-53, with 3:03 remaining. Streeter scored all five of his points in down the stretch, all from the charity stripe, as he tied the game at the line with 2:40 to go. Hill came away with a steal on the next possession off a tie-up and Johnson hit a fade-away jumper as the shot clock expired with 1:40 left to put Saint Xavier up 57-55. SAU tied the game with a running layup on its next possession. After timeout by the Cougars, Brandon drove to the basket for a layup with :59 left for the lead. A turnover and a foul put Streeter at the foul line, where he made both shots with :33 to go. St. Ambrose converted an 'old-fashioned' three-point play with :16 remaining to cut the deficit to 61-60. Streeter was fouled again with :14 left, however he split his free throws giving the Fighting Bees a chance to or take the lead. A foul put SAU at the line for a one-and-one, but the first shot missed and Brandon came away with the rebound to put the game away.
Saint Xavier (16-11, 11-8 CCAC) wraps up the regular season with a CCAC contest at University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday, February 24 in Joliet, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
