South Bend, Ind. – A layup and a free throw with one second left in regulation gave No. 4 seed Indiana University South Bend a 76-74 victory over No. 5 Saint Xavier University men's basketball (16-13, 11-9 CCAC) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Quarterfinals Wednesday evening at the Student Activities Center in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars called a timeout to draw up a play, however the game-winning three-point attempt missed. Junior forward
Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) finished with a game-high 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including a 4-for-7 mark from three-point range, four rebounds, a block and a steal before fouling out. Senior guard
Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) also had a big game for SXU, pouring 19 points while shooting at a 63.6 percent clip (7-for-11) with a season-high eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals.
- Saint Xavier shot a season-best 70.0 percent (14-for-20) from beyond the arc and they shot 60.0 percent (27-for-45) overall from the floor.
- Junior Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tied his season-high with 18 points, draining all four of his three-point attempts, on 6-for-8 shooting. He added three assists, three rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes off the bench.
- Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) also went 4-for-4 from deep and was 4-for-5 from the field with 12 points, along with two assists, two rebounds and a steal.
- Freshman guard Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) recorded five points and a blocked shot.
- The Titans controlled the pace to start the game, building a 17-7 advantage at the 11:58 mark. Brandon hit a three on an assist from Ward with 4:24 to go and Johnson followed with a steal, a basket and he converted the 'And-one' to cut the deficit to 27-24 with 3:56 remaining in the half. Johnson knocked down a trey at the buzzer to end the frame on a pass from Ward to send the Cougars into the locker room down 37-34. Johnson posted 13 points while making five of his six shot attempts in the opening period.
- Hill sank a three-pointer to open the second half, however IUSB responded with a three on its next possession and would hold the lead until Johnson tied the game at 46-46 on a layup with 12:42 left. SXU took its largest lead of the game on a sequence that saw Ward sink a three and Johnson drained two foul shots to go up 55-51 with 9:46 remaining. The contest stayed close down the stretch with neither team holding a lead larger that four points. With :18 to go, Streeter drove the lane and made the basket while being fouled. He missed the ensuing foul shot attempt with the Titans grabbing the rebound and calling a timeout that set up the game-winning basket.
