CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (7-10/0-0 CCAC) was swept by Georgetown College (Ky.) in a three-game series at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. over the weekend with a doubleheader played on Saturday afternoon and the series finale on Sunday. Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) swiped three bases in a 6-4 loss.
Game One:
- Orzech was 2-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a walk, while Massingale finished 1-for-4.
- Junior catcher Josh Cunniff (Plainfield, Ill./St. Charles CC/Plainfield Central) doubled in three at-bats and he scored a run.
- Freshman infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) went 1-for-3 with a triple.
- Junior pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) made the start and threw one inning with two strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) worked 2.0 innings of relief with two hits, two runs (both unearned) and a strikeout.
- Sophomore pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) suffered the loss (0-1) after tossing 2.0 innings with three hits, four runs (all earned) and a pair of strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed one hit, three runs (two earned), a walk and striking out three batters.
- Senior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) made his season debut with a run given up (unearned) and two walks.
- Senior pitcher Ryan Martin (Whitestone, N.Y./Iona/St. Francis Prep) also made his season debut, tossing 0.1 innings with three hits, three earned runs and a strikeout.
- Sophomore pitcher Osvaldo Ballesteros Jr. (Berwyn, Ill./St. Laurence) worked an inning, issuing a walk.
- Orzech hit his first home run of the season over the wall in right for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
- The Tigers took the lead in the top of the 3rd on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
- Orzech tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI ground-rule double in the bottom of the 3rd.
- Massingale cracked his team-leading fourth home run of the year to put the Cougars up 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th.
- Georgetown rallied for eight runs in the top of the 6th with a two-run home run, a run scored on a wild pitch, a two-run single, an RBI walk and an error that brought in two runs.
- GC added an RBI base hit and a two-run home run in the top of the 7th to go up 13-3.
- Freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) lifted a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning.
Game Two:
- McFarland was 1-for-4, while Moore had two hits in four at-bats with three runs scored.
- Hutchings went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
- Junior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) made the start (1-3) and threw 4.2 innings, surrendering eight hits, five runs (all earned), two walks and five strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) logged an inning out of the bullpen with one hit, two earned runs, two walks and a strikeout.
- Junior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) allowed two earned runs and two walks.
- Freshman pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) posted 1.1 innings of relief, giving up one hit with a strikeout.
- Freshman pitcher Andrew Young (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) surrendered a hit, two earned run and a walk.
- Sophomore pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahony) pitched an inning with a strikeout in his season debut.
- Junior pitcher Michael Spano (Downers Grove, Ill./Rock Valley/Downers Grove South) made his SXU debut, allowing a hit, an earned run and a walk.
- Freshman pitcher Nathan Montalto (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) made his collegiate debut and he worked an inning with a clean sheet.
- An RBI single gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- Georgetown tacked on four runs in the top of the 4th on an RBI groundout, an RBI single and a two-run home run.
- GC went up 9-0 in the top of the 6th off an RBI walk, an RBI hit-by-pitch and a two-run single.
- Moore got Saint Xavier on the board in the bottom of the 6th, scoring on a wild pitch.
- McFarland launched his first home run of the year leading off the bottom of the 7th and two runs scored later in the inning on an error.
- The Tigers homered in the top of the 8th and hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th.
- An error allowed Moore to score in the bottom of the 9th.
Game Three:
- Moore had two hits in three at-bats with two walks and run scored from the leadoff spot.
- Simecek went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs.
- McFarland was 1-for-4 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a walk.
- Hutchings finished 1-for-3, a steal and he drew a walk.
- Freshman infielder/pitcher Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) had an RBI sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.
- Junior pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) took the loss (1-1) after tossing 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks in his third start of the season.
- Sophomore pitcher Heath Mann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) logged 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, giving up one hit, walking two and striking out two batters.
- Antrim pitched 1.1 innings of relief with three hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
- Junior infielder/pitcher Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee Crown) tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
- Dreier posted a 1-2-3 top of the 9th.
- Two unearned runs scored for Georgetown in the top of the 1st on an RBI single and an RBI groundout.
- Dreier put down a squeeze bunt and reached on an error that drove in a run in the bottom of the 2nd.
- GC plated four runs in the top of the 4th on two RBI singles, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
- Hutchings clubbed a two-run home run to right field to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the 4th.
- McFarland pulled an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the 7th.
Saint Xavier (7-10/0-0 CCAC) begins Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play when they travel to University of St. Francis (Ill.) for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 12. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm start in Joliet, Ill.
