Lopuch Tough; No. 11 SXU Takes Down ONU in Four Sets

CHICAGO – Sophomore outside hitter Jan Lopuch (Krakow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Sportowego) finished with a season-high tying 20 kills on a spectacular .552 attack percentage (20-2-29) to help guide the No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (10-8/5-0 CCAC) to a four-set victory (22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-22) over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. He added two blocks (one solo) and a dig. It was the second time this season that Lopuch has had 20 kills in a match, it was his second-best attack percentage this season and the third time that he has had a .500 or better attack percentage this year. The 20 kills by Lopuch tied for the fifth-most in a four-set match in team history.
  • Junior outside hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) came away with 15 kills, nine digs, three service aces, two blocks (one solo) and an assist.
  • Redshirt junior middle blocker Shane Ooms (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) was the third Cougar with 10 or more kills, recording 12. He also had three blocks (one solo), three digs and a pair of aces.
  • Fifth-year senior setter Christian Oviedo (Brea, Calif./Concordia-Irvine/Servite) registered a career-best 46 assists and he added three digs.
  • Junior middle blocker Alessandro Gianotti (Desio, Italy/Brigham Young/Leonardo Da Vinci) posted seven kills on a .500 attack percentage (7-1-12), four blocks and three digs.
  • Fifth-year senior middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) also had seven kills on a .500 attack percentage (7-1-12), along with three digs.
  • Sophomore libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) collected a match-best 10 digs and he handed out three assists.
  • Freshman setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) tallied nine assists and four digs.
  • Junior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) chipped in four digs and an assist.
No. 11 Saint Xavier (10-8/5-0 CCAC) plays Roosevelt University (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 pm and Lawrence Tech University (Mich.) at 3:00 pm in the SXU Tri-Match. The Lakers and Blue Devils will play each other at 1:00 pm.
