CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (16-15/9-5 CCAC) swept a doubleheader Friday afternoon against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader winning game one 9-2 and taking the second game by a 9-5 decision. The serious shifted to Richard R. Ferrell Memoria Field in Chicago, Ill. with another twin-bill Saturday afternoon. Konner Hutchings (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Charles CC/Liberty) aided in the series win, collecting eight RBI, five runs, five walks, two doubles, a home run, a steal and a triple while hitting .364 (4-for-11) for Saint Xavier.
Game One:
- Hutchings went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a stolen base, a triple and a walk.
- Freshman infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) hit a three-run home run and was 1-for-3.
- Freshman infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) had two hits in three at-bats with a double and an RBI.
- Junior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a steal and a walk.
- Junior outfielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles CC/Carbondale Community) went 1-for-2 with two runs, two stolen bases, a double, an RBI and a walk.
- Junior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) toed the rubber and earned the win (3-3) after throwing 6.0 innings, scattering five hits with two earned runs, four walks and seven strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) worked an inning of relief with a walk and a strikeout.
- An error in the top of the 1st scored Massingale to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
- Freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) made it 2-0 in the top of the 3rd with an RBI groundout.
- Calumet St. Joseph tied the game in the bottom of the 4th on a two-run single.
- Hutchings slashed a two-run triple and he scored on Simicek's RBI base hit in the top of the 5th to put SXU up 5-2.
- Massingale roped an RBI double to left in the top of the 6th and Dreier provided some insurance with a three-run home run in the top of the 7th.
Game Two:
- Simicek collected three hits in four trips to the plate with two runs scored, a double, a triple and an RBI.
- Moore was 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two walks and a run.
- Hutchings went 1-for-3 with two runs, a double, an RBI and a walk.
- Senior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) took the bump and fired 7.0 innings (3-1) with a season-high 10 strikeouts, just one hit allowed and three walks.
- Senior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) pitched an inning out of the bullpen with two walks and a strikeout.
- Sophomore pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahoney) also worked an inning, giving up one hit, five runs (four earned), two walks and a strikeout.
- Freshman designated hitter Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) drove in a run on an RBI groundout, Hutchings laced an RBI double and he scored on an RBI triple off the bat of Simicek to put the Cougars up 3-0 in the top of the 1st.
- Dreier lined an RBI single to center in the top of the 4th and Stukenberg hit an RBI sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0 in the top of the 5th.
- In the top of the 8th, Hutchings scored on a passed ball, junior infielder Mason Johnson (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley/Quartz Hill) picked up an RBI and reach base on an error and Massingale lifted an RBI sac fly to extend the advantage to 8-0.
- An error gave sophomore pinch hitter Ryan O'Farrell (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) an RBI in the top of the 9th.
- CCSJ rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame on a bases loaded walk, a two-run double, an RBI sac fly and an error.
Game Three:
- Hutchings homered in his only official at-bat, finishing the game with three walks and two RBI.
- Moore was 1-for-3 with four stolen bases, a run scored and a walk.
- Altobelli drew three walks and went 0-for-1.
- Sophomore pitcher Heath Mann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) made start (0-2) and he went 4.0 innings with seven hits allowed, five earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts.
- Freshman pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) worked 3.0 innings of relief, giving up three hits, an earned run, a walk and two strikeouts.
- The Crimson Wave took an early lead on a leadoff home run to start the game.
- Hutchings drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 1st.
- Calumet St. Joseph responded with four runs in the top of the 2nd on an RBI double, two RBI singles and a run came home in a double play. They added a run in the top of the 7th with an RBI base hit.
- Hutchings hit an opposite field home run for SXU in the bottom of the 7th.
Game Four:
- Hutchings drove in three runs with a double to finish 1-for-4.
- Dreier also was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.
- Massingale went 1-for-2 with three steals, three walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
- Altobelli collected two RBI and was 1-for-5.
- Junior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) started the game and logged 5.2 innings to earn the win (3-1), allowing six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
- Fairley faced one batter in the top of the 6th and he recorded a strikeout.
- Freshman pitcher Andrew Young (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) tossed 0.2 innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs with a walk and a strikeout.
- Junior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) threw 1.1 innings of relief with one hit and a strikeout.
- Smyth finished the game with an inning of work with a hit and a strikeout.
- Massingale reached base on an error and a run scored, followed by an RBI single by Altobelli and an RBI groundout off the bat of Hutchings broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd to give Saint Xavier a 3-0 lead.
- Altobelli drove in a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 5th to extend the advantage to 4-0.
- CCSJ mounted a rally in the top of the 7th with an RBI single, followed by a two-run base hit before Antrim entered the game and induced a foul out down the right field line.
- Hutchings hit a two-run double off the wall in right in the bottom of the 7th and Dreier cracked a two-run home run in the bottom of the 8th.
Saint Xavier (16-15/9-5 CCAC) returns to action on Friday, April 5 when they welcome Roosevelt University (Ill.) to Ferrell Field for a CCAC doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
