Lawrenceville, Ga. – No. 24 Saint Xavier University (10-6/0-0 CCAC) took No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett College to the limit in their doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, however the Cougars upset bid fell short in both contests as the lost game one, 4-3, in extra innings, and they were held to four hits in a 1-0 setback in game two. Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the 8
th in the first contest and junior
Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) pitched a complete game in game two with five strikeouts in the night cap.
Game One:
- Reese was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a walk.
- Senior infielder Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, a run scored and a walk.
- Junior outfielder Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) doubled in three at-bats.
- Summers' final line (7-3) was 7.1 innings with 10 hits allowed, four runs (one earned), a walk and seven strikeouts.
- Koran cracked an RBI double in the top of the 1st and Reese drove her in a batter later with an RBI double of her own to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
- GGC got an unearned run in the bottom of the 2nd off of a fielder's choice.
- Reese lined an RBI single to left field in the top of the 5th to push the advantage to 3-1.
- The Grizzlies added another unearned run in the bottom of the 5th and the tied the game on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 6th.
- With the International Tie-Breaker rule in effect, placing a runner on second base to start an inning, Georgia Gwinnett sacrificed the runner over to third and won on a walk-off single with the winning run being unearned.
Game Two:
- Reese, freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) each went 1-for-3 at the plate, respectively.
- Stahulak finished 1-for-2.
- Claas (3-3) fired 6.0 innings, scattering four hits with four walks.
- GGC tallied the lone run of the game in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single down the left field line.
No. 24 Saint Xavier (10-6/0-0 CCAC) makes its way to Cleveland, Ga. for a doubleheader against Truett McConnell University (Ga.) on Wednesday, March 6. Game one of the DH is scheduled for a 1:00 pm central first pitch.
