Whiting, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University softball team (16-10/4-2 CCAC) split its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 13-4 in six innings, but falling in the night cap, 8-7. Senior infielder
Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) drove in three runs to help pace the offense and to give senior pitcher
Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) the win (11-4) in the circle in the first game. Sophomore catcher
Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, stolen base and a walk, however CCSJ plated three runs in the bottom of the 6
th and freshman pitcher
Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) suffered the loss (1-1).
Game One:
- Koran was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored
- Sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) finished 2-for-5 with three runs, three stolen bases, two RBI and a double.
- Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) tripled and collected three hits in four at-bats with three runs and a walk.
- Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double, a run scored and a walk.
- Summers logged a stat line of 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, a walk and two strikeouts.
- Wesner pitched the bottom of the 6th and recorded a strikeout.
- Carr opened the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly, Wright drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and she and sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) executed a double steal with Wright swiping home for an early 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- The Crimson Wave got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI base hit.
- Wright clubbed an RBI double and Koran lined an RBI single to push the lead to 5-1 in the top of the 3rd.
- Matlock pulled an RBI single to right, Becker picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and Koran sliced a two-run double to right to extend the advantage to 9-1 in the top of the 4th.
- Calumet St. Joseph scored on an RBI infield single in the bottom of the 4th and they added two runs in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI groundout and an RBI single.
- In the top of the 6th Matlock laced an RBI single to center, senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) drove in a pair of runs off an error and Carr hit an RBI single.
Game Two:
- Wright drove in two runs, scored twice and finished 1-for-3.
- Matlock was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double.
- Junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) had a no decision after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, four walks and striking out six batters.
- Wesner gave up three hits, three earned runs and walk in 1.1 innings of relief.
- CCSJ went up 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI double and a sac fly.
- Natanek tied the game in the top of the 4th, slugging a two-run double to center.
- The Crimson Wave went back ahead in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single.
- SXU rallied for three runs in the next half inning on an RBI single by Wright, an error allowed Wright to score and Natanek hit an RBI single for a 5-3 lead.
- Calumet St. Joseph re-tied the game in the bottom of the 5th on a pair of RBI doubles.
- Reese hit an RBI infield single and Wright lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to give Saint Xavier a 7-6 lead.
- In the bottom of the inning, CCSJ got a run on a one-out RBI double, tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch and drove in the winning run on a two-out RBI single.
Saint Xavier (16-10/4-2 CCAC) celebrates 'Senior Day' in between their CCAC doubleheader against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Saturday, April 13 at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Game one is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
