CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University softball team (17-11/5-3 CCAC) celebrated 'Senior Day' in between games of their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Junior infielder
Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) homered for the Cougars in a 4-1 loss in game one. Sophomore outfielder
Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) collected three RBI while senior infielder
Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) hit a home run and junior pitcher
Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) tossed a two-hitter in a 5-1 victory in the second game.
Saint Xavier recognized four seniors before the start of game two; senior outfielder
Devin Dubsky (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), senior infielder
Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East), Reese and senior pitcher
Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic).
Game One:
- Carr finished 2-for-3.
- Reese also went 2-for-3, as did junior designated player Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West).
- Summers (11-5) threw a complete game, going 7.0 innings with eight hits allowed, four earned runs and eight strikeouts.
- Carr clubbed her second home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the 2nd to give SXU a 1-0 lead.
- The Fighting Bees responded with a two-out rally in the top of the 3rd on an RBI single and a two-run double. They tacked on another run in the top of the 4th off an RBI base hit.
Game Two:
- Reese had three hits in three trips to the plate with two RBI.
- Matlock went 2-for-4 and a run scored.
- Freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.
- Stahulak finished 2-for-4.
- Claas (5-5) fired her seventh complete game of the year, pitching 7.0 innings and scattering two hits with one run (unearned), six walks and seven strikeouts.
- Matlock lined an RBI single back up the middle and Reese pulled an RBI single down the left field line to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the 1st.
- Matlock drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 2nd and she laced another RBI base hit up the middle in the bottom of the 4th to push the lead to 4-0.
- Reese slugged her second home run of the 2024 campaign to start the bottom of the 5th.
- St. Ambrose tallied an unearned run in the top of the 6th off of an SXU error.
Saint Xavier (17-11/5-3 CCAC) travels to Rosemont, Ill. to play Roosevelt University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16. Game one is slated for a 4:00 pm first pitch.
