CHICAGO – Sophomore outfielder
Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while freshman outfielder
Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was 5-for-6 with four runs, two walks, an RBI and a stolen base to help Saint Xavier University softball (18-12/6-4 CCAC) earn a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) split with Roosevelt University (Ill.) Thursday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Rosemont, Ill. and the Cougars were the visiting team on the score board. Matlock drove in a run for SXU in game one, however the Lakers won on a walk-off RBI single for a 2-1 victory. Matlock & Wrobel combined to go 7-for-7 with six runs scored from the 1-2 spot in the lineup to set the table for their teammates in a 12-4 triumph in five innings in game two.
Game One:
- Wroble had two hits in three at-bats with a run, a steal and a walk.
- Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) doubled and finished 1-for-3.
- Senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) and sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) each went 1-for-3.
- Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) suffered the loss (11-6) after pitching 6.1 innings with just three hits allowed, two runs (one earned) and five strikeouts.
- Matlock grounded out to score Wrobel in the top of the 1st to give Saint Xavier an early advantage.
- RU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single with the run being unearned.
- Roosevelt ended the game with a one-out RBI single back up the middle in the bottom of the 7th.
Game Two:
- Matlock singled all four times at the plate with three runs scored.
- Wroble collected three hits in three official at-bats with three runs, an RBI and a walk.
- Reese went 1-for-3 with four RBI, including a three-run home run.
- Carr tallied three RBI and again was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a walk.
- Sophomore designated player Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) was 1-for- 3 with two RBI.
- Sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) clubbed a pair of doubles with two runs and an RBI while going 2-for-3.
- Junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start in the circle and finished with a no decision after throwing 2.2 inning with five hits, four earned runs and a walk.
- Summers (12-6) picked up the win in relief, logging 2.1 innings and she allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
- Reese bashed her team-leading third home run of the season to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- Wroble scored Wright from second on a bunt back to the pitcher to extend the lead to 4-0 in the top of the 2nd.
- The Lakers tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd with back-to-back home runs, a three-run shot and a solo blast that chased Claas, all with two outs.
- SXU responded with three runs in the top of the 4th as Reese lifted an RBI sacrifice fly and Natanek lined a two-run single back up the middle to go up 7-4.
- Saint Xavier plated five runs in the top of the 5th with Wright legging out an RBI double, Becker hitting a pinch-hit RBI single and Carr cleared the bases with a three-run double to the gap in left center.
- Summers worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 5th to secure the series split.
Saint Xavier (18-12/6-4 CCAC) makes the short trip to Palos Heights, Ill. to play Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 20. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
