Saint Xavier Softball Sweeps Trinity Christian

Palos Heights, Ill. – Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) came away with a pair of victories in the circle to improve her record to 14-6 on the season as the Saint Xavier University softball team (20-12/8-4 CCAC) swept Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Schaaf Athletic Complex in Palos Heights, Ill. Summers fired a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) slugged a pair of home runs in a 9-0 victory in six innings in game one. Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) belted a three-run home run and junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) hit what proved to be the game-winning home run as SXU outlasted a Troll rally in the bottom of the 7th to claim a 7-6 triumph after Summers reentered the game to post a strikeout with the tying run on base with two outs.

Game One:
  • Wright went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
  • Sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) homered with a double, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Freshman outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had two RBI and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Summers went the distance for the 15th time on the year.
  • Senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) sparked a four-run rally in the top of the 3rd with an RBI sacrifice fly. Carr followed with an RBI single and Wright smashed a two-run home run over the wall in left field.
  • Wright bashed her team-leading fourth home run of the season to lead off the top of the 6th. Becker hammered her first home run of the year, a two-run shot to center, and Matlock lined a two-run base hit back up the middle to push the advantage to 9-0.
  • Summers pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th to nail down the win.
Game Two:
  • Reese was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Wroble collected two hits in four at-bats with two runs, as did Morgan.
  • Carr & Wright each finished 1-for-4, with Wright driving in two runs and scoring once.
  • Summers made the start, working 4.2 innings with six hits allowed, three runs (one earned) and striking out five batters.
  • Junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) logged 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering five hits, three earned runs and a walk.
  • Reese poked an RBI single up the middle to give SXU a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
  • Trinity Christian tied the game in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI base hit to the gap in right center.
  • Wright slashed a two-run single to right field and Carr cracked her third home run of the season to put Saint Xavier up 6-1 in the top of the 5th.
  • TCC tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single and an RBI groundout. They cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the 6th with a home run.
  • Morgan pulled a two-out homer, her first home run of the year, over the wall in the left in the top of the 7th.
  • Claas retired the first two batters she faced in the bottom of the 7th; however, the Trolls drew a walk and singled before a pinch-hit two-run double made it 7-6. Summers came in and recorded a backwards K to secure the victory.
Saint Xavier (20-12/8-4 CCAC) returns to the SXU Softball Field to host Judson University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
