Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) finished with a team-high 12 digs, giving him 307 on the season to set the single-season program record for digs, to help lead the No. 7 ranked and No. 1 seed Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (20-8/10-0 CCAC) to a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) over No. 4 Judson University (Ill.) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Semifinals Friday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars will face No. 2 Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) after the Crimson Wave defeated No. 3 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in five sets prior to SXU's match at the Shannon Center.
- Velez breaks former standout and current assistant coach Jake Olson's digs record (2017-19) of 306 set during the 2019 campaign. Velez also added five assists for Saint Xavier in the win.
- Junior outside hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) just missed a double-double, collecting 11 digs and eight kills. He also had a pair of blocks and an assist.
- Junior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) came away with a match-high tying nine kills and he had a block assist.
- Sophomore outside hitter Jan Lopuch (Krakow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Sportowego) tallied seven kills, four digs, two assists, two blocks (one solo) and two service aces.
- Fifth-year senior setter Christian Oviedo (Brea, Calif./Concordia-Irvine/Servite) handed out a match-best 23 assists, along with four digs.
- Fifth-year senior middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) posted six kills on a .667 attack percentage (6-0-9) with three blocks (one solo), an assist and a dig.
- Freshman setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) recorded four digs, a match-high three aces and a pair of assists.
- Redshirt-junior middle blocker Shane Ooms (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) registered three blocks, two kills and a service ace.
- Senior middle blocker Jake McClain (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) added two blocks (one solo), two digs and two kills.
No. 7 Saint Xavier (20-8/10-0 CCAC) faces Calumet St. Joseph in the CCAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, April 20 at the Shannon Center. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first serve.
