Wright Powers Saint Xavier Past St. Francis in DH Sweep

CHICAGO – Sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) hit her team-leading second home run of the season in game one and added a two-run double to help guide the Saint Xavier University softball team (15-9/3-1 CCAC) to a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victories over University of St. Francis (Ill) Saturday afternoon at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Ill. Senior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) threw a complete game, her 12th of the year, in a 4-3 victory in game one and freshman pitcher Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) earned the win in her collegiate debut in relief in a 10-7 win for the Cougars in game two.

Game One:
  • Wright went 1-for-4 in the contest.
  • Sophomore designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) was 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Junior outfielder Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) had a pair of hits in three at-bats with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run and a walk.
  • Summers (10-4) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up just five hits, three earned runs and striking out six batters.
  • St. Francis took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Wright ignited a four-run rally in the top of the 6th by hitting a leadoff home run. Stahulak hit an RBI single and another run scored via an error. Matlock drove in a run with an RBI base hit.
  • USF hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th before Summers recorded a lineout and a groundout to come away with the win.
Game Two:
  • Wright had a pair of hits in four at-bats and a run.
  • Senior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) homered in three trips to the plate.
  • Junior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.
  • Senior infielder Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Matlock finished 2-for-5, scoring three runs and picking up an RBI.
  • Freshman infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had an RBI and drew a walk while going 1-for-4.
  • Junior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start in the circle, tossing 3.1 innings with five hits, three earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts.
  • Wesner (1-0) worked 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing four hits, three runs (one earned) and a strikeout.
  • Summers threw 1.2 innings of relief with two hits, an unearned run, a walk and a strikeout.
  • Reese clubbed her first home run of the season to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
  • Wroble extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the 2nd with an RBI base hit.
  • The Fighting Saints got on the board with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • Carr ripped an RBI single in the top of the 3rd to make it 3-1.
  • St. Francis responded with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Matlock hit an RBI infield single and Wright lined a two-run double to put the Cougars ahead 6-2 in the top of the 4th.
  • USF hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th.
  • In the top of the 6th, Matlock raced home on a wild pitch, Carr laced a two-run single and Koran pulled an RBI single to left field to push the advantage to 10-3.
  • The Fighting Saints responded with three runs in the bottom of the 6th on a two-run double and a wild pitch. They added an unearned run off an error on the bottom of the 7th with two outs, however Summers rolled up a groundball to secure the victory.
Saint Xavier (15-9/3-1 CCAC) makes the trip to Whiting, Ind. to face Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
