Davila’s Late Goal Lifts SXU in 1-0 Victory over SAU

CHICAGO – Junior midfielder Veronica Davila (Bourbonnais, Ill./Governors State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) scored the game-winning goal with just :02 left in the match to give the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team (4-3-1, 2-1 CCAC) a thrilling 1-0 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. In the closing moments of the match, and playing with just 10 players after a red card earlier in the half, Davila poached a pass deep in SAU's zone, drove from the near right side of the field, centered her attempt and snuck the ball past the goalkeeper into the lower right corner for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Eden Suda (Western Springs, Ill./Governors State/ Lyons Township) collected three saves and she recorded her second consecutive shutout to improve to 2-0 in her four appearances in net with two starts.
  • Davila finished with a match-high tying seven shot attempts and she had a match-best five shots on goal.
  • Senior midfielder/defender Jacqueline Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./Curie) had one shot on goal in 86 minutes of play.
  • Fifth-year senior defender/midfielder Neida Ocampo (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Harper/Conant) and sophomore forward Alex Jonaitis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) each had one shot attempt, respectively.
  • Both teams had five shot attempts in the first have and Suda made a pair of saves.
  • In the 82nd minute, Suda stopped a shot from the left side and the Fighting Bees appeared to net the first goal of the match, however the goal was disallowed after the side referee ruled the St. Ambrose player offsides.
  • With 19 seconds remaining, Davila headed a shot that was saved after a corner kick from Jonaitits.
  • A yellow card was issued to the Cougars just a few seconds later that stopped the clock and would lead to Davila's heroics.
