No. 2 SXU Outlasts No. 15 Indiana Tech in Five-Set Thriller

CHICAGO – Senior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) recorded his second service ace of the night to give No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball (2-0/0-0 CCAC) a hard-fought five-set victory (25-13, 27-29, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10) over No. 15 ranked Indiana Tech University on day two of the SXU Tournament Friday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Carey posted both of his aces in the final frame on two of three service attempts. Overall, he finished the match with nine kills, seven digs, three blocks (one solo) and two assists. SXU tallied 12.5 blocks, a night after they had 12.0 blocks in their season-opener. As a team, the Cougars had an attack percentage of .273 (57-21-132), along with 51 assists and 50 digs.
  • Senior outside hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) registered his second consecutive double-double as he had 21 assists and 12 kills. Pennala also added seven digs, two aces and two blocks (one solo).
  • Sophomore outside hitter Caydann Cox (Jamestown, N.D./Jamestown/Jamestown) also came away with a double-double, posting 11 digs and 11 kills, while adding three blocks (one solo) and a service ace.
  • Junior opposite hitter Oskar Krzyzak (Now Sacz, Poland/Szkota Mistrzostwa Sportowego Rzeszow) led Saint Xavier with 13 kills, and he had a pair of blocks (one solo).
  • Sophomore setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) handed out a team-leading 24 assists, along with six digs.
  • Graduate student middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) registered seven kills on a .600 attack percentage (7-1-10) with four blocks (two solos) and four digs.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Camden Steckler (Manteca, Calif./Jamestown/Manteca) added five kills and four blocks (one solo) for SXU.
  • Junior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) scooped up a match-best 15 digs and he had four assists.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (2-0/0-0 CCAC) concludes the SXU Tournament on Saturday, January 25 when they take on University of California Merced. The match is slated for a 2:00 pm start at the Shannon Center.
