SXU Women’s Volleyball Splits at St. Ambrose Tri-Match

Davenport, Iowa – Senior outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) established a new career-high with 16 kills to help guide the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (14-7, 12-3 CCAC) to a comeback 3-2 victory (22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 15-9) over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action in the first match of a tri-tournament at Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa. Redshirt junior ouside hitter Carolina Cosme (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Judson/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) collected a team-best, and season-high, seven kills in a 3-0 setback (12-25, 15-25, 15-25) to Columbia College (Mo.) in the second match of the afternoon.

Match One:
  • Jensen added five digs, three blocks (one solo) and an assist.
  • Fifth year senior libero Avanna Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) set a new career-high in digs, and the third-most digs by a Cougar in program history, with 38. She also had a career-high 11 assists while adding two service aces.
  • Senior setter Samantha Hovey (Mackinaw, Ill./Heartland/Dee-Mack) produced her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 27 assists, 17 digs and 11 kills. She also had three aces and a block.
  • Junior setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) issued 17 assists, while adding eight digs and three service aces.
  • Senior outside hitter Tara Glynn (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) totaled a career-best 11 kills, along with a pair of digs.
  • Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Delaney Panozzo (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) came away with nine kills, three digs and a block.
  • Senior middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) recorded seven kills, two blocks, two digs and an assist.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Carrington Smith (Flossmoor, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted six kills, two blocks and a service ace.
  • Graduate student defensive specialist Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) came away with 12 digs, her second-highest total this year, and three aces.
  • Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) logged eight digs, an assist and a service ace.
  • Senior defensive specialist Ariel Hoskin (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) added eight digs as well in the conference win.
Match Two:
  • Junior outside hitter Kaylee Born (Plainfield, Ill./Oswego East) tallied six kills and a pair of digs.
  • Opilka totaled 13 assists, an ace and a dig.
  • Vann scooped up 11 digs while adding three assists.
  • Junior middle blocker Jessica Butler (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) registered a career-high four kills.
  • Freshman middle blocker Ellie Graf (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Christian) also came away with a career-high in kills with three. She added two blocks (one solo) and a dig.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Eva Wintersteen (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) finished with three kills, a block and a dig.
  • DeHaan chipped in six digs, while Hoskin collected four digs and an assist, and Hovey had six assists and three digs
  • Sophomore setter Raeley Mungcal (Tinley Park, Ill./Benedictine/Tinley Park) handed out four assists.
  • Senior outside hitter Maggie Sroka (Hickory Hills, Ill./Triton/Argo Community) recorded two digs, an assist, a kill and a service ace.
Saint Xavier (14-7/12-3 CCAC) makes the trip to Joliet, Ill. to play University of St. Francis (Ill.) on a CCAC tilt on Tuesday, October 29. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm first serve.
