CHICAGO – Freshman guard
Brooklynn Johnson (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) shot 66.7 percent from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, finishing with a game-high 19 points, along with seven rebounds and an assist to help lead Saint Xavier University women's basketball (8-3, 5-0 CCAC) to a 69-40 non-conference victory over Aquinas College (Mich.) Wednesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. It was the fourth consecutive game scoring in double-figures for Johnson, and her seventh game overall this season scoring 10 or more points. The Cougars knocked down 10 threes in the game, their second straight game with 10 or more three-pointers. SXU limited the Saints to 25.0 percent shooting (13-for-52), allowing a season low in points and shooting percentage.
After falling behind 7-5 at the 6:27 mark of the opening period, Johnson tied the game to fuel a 14-2 run to close the frame, giving the Cougars a 19-9 lead after one quarter of action. Aquinas hit consecutive threes to pull within eight points just under two minutes remaining in the half, however SXU also made back-to-back treys to push their advantage to double-digits. Saint Xavier carried a 37-25 lead at halftime. The Cougar defense was tough in the second half, limiting AC to a total of 15 points on 4-for-27 shooting (14.8 percent). SXU blocked four shots in the third quarter as they held the Saints to just 1-for-15 from the field.
- Sophomore forward Veronica Bafia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) made six of her 12 shots, collecting 16 points with four rebounds, a season-best three blocks and a pair of steals in 26 minutes on the court.
- Senior guard Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) tallied 11 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 4-for-8 overall. She added three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 22 minutes of play.
- Freshman guard Taryn Fisher (Westfield, Ind./Carmel) made her collegiate debut, going 3-for-3 for seven points, along with two rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes off the bench.
- Freshman forward Alaina Peetz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) totaled a game-high 12 rebounds (four offensive) with three assists, three steals, two blocked shots and two points.
- Junior guard Madyson Kibelkis (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) added six points and two rebounds.
Saint Xavier (8-3/5-0 CCAC) welcome No. 17 University of St. Francis (Ill.) to the Shannon Center on Saturday, December 13 for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest. The game is set for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
