No. 3 SXU Falls to No. 6 Calumet St. Joseph in CCAC Quarterfinals

CHICAGO – Senior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss)  scored a career-high 27 points and he had a chance to tie the game as time expired in regulation, however his three-point shot was off the mark and the No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University men's basketball team (19-10, 14-6 CCAC) lost to No. 6 seed Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 73-70, in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Quarterfinals Tuesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Hill finished the game 9-for-14 from the field, 3-for-7 from beyond the arc and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line, along with six rebounds and an assist in 35 minutes of action.

For the game, the Cougars were outshot 45.5 percent (22-for-42) to 38.1 percent (24-for-63). CCSJ doubled SXU at the foul line with 42 attempts to 21 attempts, though Saint Xavier had a better percentage 76.2 percent (16-for-21) to 54.8 percent (23-for-42). The Cougars trailed by as many as 20 points, 37-17, in the first half before closing out the frame on a 12-2 run to be down 39-29 at halftime. SXU chipped away in the second half and pulled within two, 49-47, after a three-pointer from senior forward Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) to force a Crimson Wave timeout at the 11:37 mark. Saint Xavier was unable to net the tying basket down the stretch as Calumet St. Joseph pulled away with 18 free throws on 31 attempts.
  • Brandon totaled 17 points, eight rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes.
  • Senior guard Jordan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northwood/Wilmington/East Kentwood) tallied eight points, two rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot.
  • Senior forward Kevin Bishop (Cleveland, Ohio/Pikeville/Parkland/Cleveland Benedictine) collected six points, six rebounds, a block and a steal.
  • Fifth-year senior guard Julian Barr (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Land/Lincoln-Way) recorded six points and three rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
  • Junior guard Ashton Atwater (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Valley/Ostego) came away with three assists, three points and a rebound in 26 minutes on the court.
  • Junior guard Mekhi Wilson (Covington, Ky./Iowa Central/Covington Catholic) added three points and a rebound for the Cougars.
