CHICAGO – Senior infielder
Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) homered in both games of the doubleheader, however Saint Xavier University baseball (9-13/2-4 CCAC) was swept by Judson University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Massingale was 1-for-4 in game one, scoring two runs and driving in a pair in a 13-7 loss to the Eagles. He went 1-for-2 in the second game, drawing a pair of walks and hitting his third home run of the season in a 13-3 setback in the second contest.
Game One:
- Senior outfielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Palm Desert) collected two hits in three at-bats with a two-run double and a run scored.
- Junior designated hitter Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles.
- Sophomore infielder Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) was 1-for-2, hitting his first home run of the season, along with a walk and a stolen base.
- Senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) went 1-for-3 with two runs, a home run and a walk.
- Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) posted a pair of singles in two trips to the plate and he had a stolen base.
- Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) made his first start of the season (1-1), going 2.0 innings with seven hits and six earned runs allowed.
- Junior pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) threw 3.0 innings of relief with four hits allowed, four earned runs and four strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) tossed an inning giving up five hits, three earned runs and a walk.
- Freshman pitcher Tyler Deluca (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) worked an inning out of the bullpen, striking out all three batters he faced.
- Moore cracked a leadoff home run down the line in left field to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
- JU responded with six runs in the top of the 2nd on an RBI groundout, a two-run double, an RBI single, an RBI double.
- Judson hit a solo home run in the top of the 3rd.
- The Eagles added a three-run home run in the top of the 5th.
- In the bottom half of the inning, pulled a two-run double down the left field line and Massingale cleared the wall in left field with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 10-5.
- Stukenberg belted his first home run of the year to center field in the bottom of the 6th.
- JU hit a pair of solo home runs and an RBI double in the top of the 7th.
- In the bottom of the 7th, sophomore infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) drove in a run on an infield fly, however the Eagles converted an out on the base paths to end the game.
Game Two:
- Graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) was 1-for-3 with a home run for his 200th career collegiate hit.
- Hammond finished 2-for-3 with a steal and a run scored.
- Jimenez went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a hit-by-pitch.
- Senior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) toed the rubber in game two, tossing 5.0 innings with six hits, four earned run and three strikeouts to suffer the loss (2-4).
- Junior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) threw 0.2 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs and posting a strikeout.
- Sophomore Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) logged 1.1 innings of relief, surrendering six hits and five earned runs.
- Judson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd on an RBI groundout and they would go up 4-0 in the top of the 3rd off a two-run triple and a throwing error that allowed the runner to score from third.
- Steig clubbed a home run over the wall in center field for his milestone hit in the bottom of the 4th.
- The Eagles tacked on four runs in the top of the 6th on three solo home runs and an RBI single.
- Massingale cracked a solo home run to left center field in the bottom half of the inning.
- JU added five runs in the top of the 7th on a three-run home run, an RBI double and an RBI base hit.
- Jimenez lined a two-out RBI single for SXU in the bottom of the 7th.
Saint Xavier (9-13/2-4 CCAC) travels to South Bend, Ind. to start a four-game series with a doubleheader against Indiana University South Bend starting on Friday, March 21. Game one starts at 1:00 pm central time.
