Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) lined a walk-off RBI double over the center fielder with two outs in the bottom of the 7
th to give Saint Xavier University baseball (7-9/0-0 CCAC) a 1-0 victory over Georgetown College (Ky.) in game one of their doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Moore finished the game 2-for-4 while adding a triple. SXU lost the second game by a score of 9-7, junior catcher
Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) slugged his first home run of the season and senior infielder
Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) added two RBI in the loss.
Game One:
- Massingale was 1-for-2 with a double and a stolen base.
- Sophomore pitcher/infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) fired 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits with three walks and a season-high nine strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) earned the win (1-0) after throwing 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.
- Dreier pitched out of a jam in the top of the 4th after a pair of Saint Xavier errors and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. He recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a lineout to second base got him out of the inning.
- Sophomore catcher Victor Zaragoza (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit an infield single and he advanced to second on an error with one out in the bottom of the 7th. One batter later, Moore lined the game-winning double.
Game Two:
- Orzech was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Moore finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases, a triple and a walk.
- Massingale went 2-for-4 with a run, a steal and a walk.
- Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) had a hit in three at-bats with an RBI and a stolen base
- Graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) also was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Sophomore designated hitter John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) went 1-for-5 with an RBI.
- Junior pitcher Thomas Plizga (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Fremd) made the start and took the loss (2-2). He threw 3.2 innings, surrendering four hits, five earned runs, four walks and striking out four batters.
- Sophomore pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) faced three batters, allowing a hit, two runs and two walks.
- Junior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) worked 2.0 innings, giving up three hits, one run and walking two batters.
- Junior pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) pitched 1.1 innings of relief with three hits, a run, a walk and two strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee-Crown) logged 2.0 innings out of the bullpen and posting two strikeouts.
- Massingale gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI groundout.
- The Tigers tied the game in the top of the 2nd off a sacrifice fly.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Orzech belted a two-run home run over the wall in left field.
- Georgetown took the lead in the top of the 4th, scoring six runs. They hit a sac fly, drew a bases loaded walk, an RBI single, another RBI walk and a two-run base hit.
- SXU plated three runs in the bottom of the 5th when Massingale hit an RBI single, Steig lifted a sacrifice fly to right field and Simecek drove in a run on a groundout.
- GC went up 8-6 in the top of the 6th on an RBI walk.
- Hammond got a run back in the bottom of the 6th with a sac fly.
- The Tigers capped the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the 7th.
Saint Xavier (7-9/0-0 CCAC) begins Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Friday, March 7 when they play a doubleheader against St. Ambrose University (Iowa). Game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Plaster Athletic Complex in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
