SXU Baseball Falls to IU South Bend, Splits Series

CHICAGO – With the four-game series originally scheduled to have all four games played in South Bend, Ind., the final two games were moved to Saint Xavier as the field in South Bend was unplayable, however the Saint Xavier University baseball team (11-15/4-6 CCAC), playing as the road team, lost the final two games of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series by scores of 8-4 and 3-2, respectively, Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field. Graduate student infielder Gabe Kirck (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Olivet/De La Salle) belted his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the first game. Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) and senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) each had RBI base hits in game two.

Game One:
  • Kirck finished 2-for-3 while adding a double.
  • Moore went 1-for-4, legging out an RBI triple, his team-best sixth of the year.
  • Hammond was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
  • Senior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) made the start, tossing 4.0 innings with five hit, four runs (three earned) and five strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher/infielder Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee-Crown) took the loss after throwing 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. He surrendered two hits, four runs (one earned), three walks and he had two strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) worked 0.2 innings, issuing a walk.
  • IUSB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI double and an SXU error. They doubled their advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the 3rd with a two-run double.
  • Moore split the gap the right center to drive in a run on his RBI triple in the top of the 5th.
  • In the top of the 6th, Kirck cleared the wall in right field for a two-run home run. Later in the inning, Hammond tied the game at 4-4 when he sliced an RBI double to right field.
  • The Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the 6th, with three being unearned. A fielder's choice RBI and an error gave them a 6-4 lead. Another fielder's choice RBI and an RBI walked capped the scoring at 8-4.
Game Two:
  • Senior outfielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Palm Desert) and junior utility player Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) each were 2-for-4 at the plate. Jimenez drew a walk and he had a stolen base, while Zbrozek scored a run.
  • Senior infielder Konner Hutchings (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Charles/Liberty) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Moore had a hit in five at-bats with an RBI.
  • Hammond finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
  • Sophomore pitcher/infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) suffered the loss (1-3) after he threw 5.0 innings with just two hits, one unearned run and four strikeouts.
  • Scott made his second appearance of the day, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing just a hit.
  • Sophomore Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) pitched 1.1 innings of relief as well. He gave up one hit, two runs (both unearned) and he posted two strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) recorded the final two outs with one strikeout.
  • Indiana South Bend broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 6th on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Titans added two more runs in the bottom of the 7th on an error and a safety squeeze sac bunt.
  • Saint Xavier rallied for two runs in the top of the 9th. Hammond lined an RBI single to left field and Moore followed with a RBI base hit, slashed to the gap in left center. The Cougars had the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but a double play ended the contest.
Saint Xavier (11-15/4-6 CCAC) returns to action with a CCAC doubleheader against University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Friday, March 28 at Ferrell Field. Game one is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
