Gulf Shores, Ala. – The Saint Xavier University softball team (13-4/0-0 CCAC) hammered out a combined 34 hits and scored 24 runs to come away with a pair of victories in the Gulf Shores Tournament Saturday afternoon in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Cougars defeated Brenau University (Ga.) in their first game of the day as junior outfielder
Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) and infielder
Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) each had three hits, and sophomore pitcher
Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) threw a complete game in the win. SXU scored a season-high 18 runs and a season-best 19 hits in an 18-3 triumph over Point University (Ga.) in game two. Five players had two RBI apiece and Crane scored four runs while tying her single-game program record with four stolen bases.
Game One:
- Crane was 3-for-4 with two steals, an RBI and a run scored.
- Wroble went 3-for-4 as well, adding an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Sophomore designated player Yalitza Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) had three hits in three at-bats, driving in two runs and drawing a walk.
- Junior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a steal.
- Senior infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) also was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a walk.
- Wesner (5-0) logged 7.0 inning, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, four walks and striking out two batters.
- Brenau took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a pair of RBI singles.
- Saint Xavier responded in the bottom half of the inning when Matlock sliced an RBI single to left field.
- The Tigers added a run in the top of the 2nd on an RBI groundout.
- Wroble drove in a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 2nd.
- The Cougars went up 4-3 in the bottom of the 3rd. Lovan lined an RBI single back up the middle and Carr hit an RBI base hit through the right side of the infield.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Lovan hit an RBI infield single.
- Crane pulled an RBI single down the right field line in the bottom of the 5th.
- BU scored on an RBI base hit in the top of the 6th, but Wesner worked a 1-2-3 top of the 7th to secure the win.
Game Two:
- Crane went 3-for-3 while adding two RBI and two walks.
- Wroble had two hits in three trips to the plate with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Junior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) collected two hits in three at-bats with two RBI, a double and a run scored.
- Senior catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run.
- Senior pinch-hitter/designated player Kyla Kissee (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) also went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Freshman pinch-hitter/catcher Kacey Sterkowitz (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) made her collegiate debut, collecting a hit in her first career at-bat. She finished 2-for-2 with her first RBI and first run.
- Senior pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start, tossing 2.0 innings, giving up one hit, two earned runs, four walks and posting a strikeout.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) earned the win (4-1) in relief, working 3.0 innings out of the bullpen. She scattered two hits with one unearned run and a strikeout.
- SXU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st. O'Connor smashed a two-run double and sophomore infielder Yalayzah Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) drove in a run on an RBI groundout with O'Connor scoring on an error.
- Wroble picked up an RBI on a groundout in the top of the 2nd.
- Four more runs crossed the plate for Saint Xavier in the top of the 3rd. Morgan clubbed a two-run double, while Crane and Wroble hit back-to-back RBI bunt singles.
- Point got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI base hit.
- The Cougars doubled their lead in the top of the 5th, scoring nine runs. Senior pinch-hitter/outfielder Chloe Erwin (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) hit an RBI single, sophomore pinch-hitter/infielder Megan Kirnbauer (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) drove in her first run of the season, Kissee laced a two-run single, freshman pinch-hitter/infielder Juliana Anderson (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to earn her first collegiate RBI, Sterkowitz had an RBI base hit and Crane capped the rally with an RBI single.
- The Skyhawks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th before Antkiewicz induced a pop out to end the game.
Saint Xavier (13-4/0-0 CCAC) concludes play in the Gulf Shores Tournament when they take on No. 13 ranked William Carey University (Miss.) at 1:30 pm in Gulf Shores, Ala.
