Steig Collects Three Hits for SXU in 13-3 loss to Eastern Illinois

Charleston, Ill. – Graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, however Saint Xavier University baseball (22-19/15-9 CCAC) lost to NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University 13-3 in eight innings Tuesday afternoon at Coaches Stadium in Charleston, Ill in non-conference play. The Panthers gain a measure of revenge after SXU was victorious over EIU, 4-2, last season also in Charleston, Ill.
  • Senior outfielder Michael Flier (Greenup, Ill./Spoon River/Cumberland) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double
  • Senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a pair of stolen bases and a walk.
  • Sophomore infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) had a hit in three at-bats and a steal.
  • Senior infielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) drove in two runs with a walk while going 0-for-3.
  • Senior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) made the start and suffered the loss (0-2), throwing 2.0 innings with six hits allowed, five earned runs and a strikeout.
  • Sophomore pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) worked 3.0 innings of relief, giving up three hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out five batters.
  • Redshirt freshman pitcher Jake Fenton (Chicago, Ill./Loras/Brother Rice) worked an inning, surrendering three hits, three earned runs, a walk and recording a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Jarrett Kenyon (Henderson, Nev./Utah State Eastern/South Suburban/Coronado) also threw an inning out of the bullpen, coming away with a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Alberto Lamas (Joliet, Ill./South Suburban/Joliet Catholic Academy) made his Saint Xavier debut, pitching 0.1 innings with two hits, two earned runs and a walk.
  • Massingale gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an RBI groundout driving in Moore.
  • Eastern Illinois rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 5-1 on a home run, three RBI base hits and an RBI double.
  • In the top of the 3rd, Massingale drove Moore in again in an RBI groundout to make it 5-2.
  • The Panthers plated three runs to push their advantage to 8-2 in the bottom of the 4th on an error, a run-scoring wild pitch and an RBI groundout.
  • Flier hammered an RBI double in the top of the 6th to cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • EIU responded with an RBI single and an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning. They ended the game in the bottom of the 8th on a home run and a walk-off, run-scoring wild pitch.
Saint Xavier (22-19/15-9 CCAC) returns to Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field to play Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader on Thursday, April 17. Game one is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
