Saint Xavier Baseball Sweeps Series from Calumet St. Joseph

CHICAGO – Behind a season-high 10 strikeouts from senior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Calif/) in game one and a three-run home run off the bat of junior designated hitter Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) in game two, the Saint Xavier University baseball team (26-19/19-9 CCAC) completed a four-game series sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader held at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. with SXU playing as the road team Saturday afternoon. McCleery (6-4) allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings with one earned run in a 6-1 victory. Orzech's eighth home run of the season helped the Cougars pull away for an 11-1 triumph in eight innings in the second game.

Game One:
  • Graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Graduate student designated hitter/infielder Gabe Kirck (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Olivet/De La Salle) was 2-for-3 as well, adding a double, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) collected two hits in three at-bats.
  • Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) threw 1.1 innings of relief with one hit and one strikeout.
  • Senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) stole a base and scored on an error to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
  • Moore tacked on an RBI in the top of the 3rd with a sacrifice fly.
  • Sophomore infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) made it 3-0 in the top of the 4th win a sac fly of his own.
  • In the top of the 6th, Kirck pulled an RBI single through the right side of the infield and Steig lined a two-run base hit back up the middle to extend the advantage to 6-0.
  • The Crimson Wave got on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Two:
  • Simecek finished 3-for-4 with a home run and a stolen base.
  • Kirck was 2-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles and two runs.
  • Orzech went 1-for-3, scoring two runs with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Senior infielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) had two hits in three trips to the plate with a run scored.
  • Dreier made the start, improving his record to 4-4 on the mound this year. He threw 5.1 innings with just three hits given up, one run (unearned), a walk and five strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee-Crown) worked 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one base runner on a hit-by-pitch.
  • Redshirt junior pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahoney) pitched an inning with one hit surrendered.
  • Simecek put the Cougars up 1-0 in the top of the 3rd with a home run over the wall in left field.
  • CCSJ tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single.
  • In the top of the 4th, junior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) drew a base loaded walk to collect an RBI, graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) drove in a run on an RBI groundout and Moore laced an RBI single to center field for a 4-1 lead.
  • Kirck sliced a bases clearing three-run double to the gap in left center and Polickey lifted a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 8-1 in the top of the 7th.
  • Orzech hammered a three-run home run to left center to cap the scoring in the top of the 8th.
Saint Xavier (26-19/19-9 CCAC) returns to action on Friday, April 25, when they celebrate 'Senior Day' after their CCAC doubleheader with Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at Ferrell Field. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
