O’Connor Drives in Six as No. 19 SXU Sweeps CCSJ

CHICAGO – Junior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) totaled six RBIs on the day, collecting three in each game of a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader sweep for No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University softball (23-6/6-0 CCAC) of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Saturday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. O'Connor, along with sophomore catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais), both had three RBIs in an 11-5 victory in game one. O'Connor added three more RBIs and junior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) scored three runs as the Cougars defeated the Crimson Wave 8-2 in the second contest.

Game One:
  • All 10 players for SXU that had an at-bat recorded at least one base hit.
  • Sophomore outfielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) batted leadoff and she had four hits in five at-bats and scoring three times.
  • Matlock was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a two-run triple and a stolen base.
  • O'Connor finished 1-for-3, while Johnson went 1-for-4.
  • Junior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) was 2-for-4 with a run and a steal.
  • Junior designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) hit an RBI double while going 1-for-3.
  • Junior infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had two hits in three official at-bats with a run scored and a walk.
  • Senior pinch hitter/designated player Kyla Kissee (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) singled in her lone at-bat, adding an RBI and scoring a run.
  • Sophomore pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) improved to 9-4 in the circle after logging her 10th complete game of the season. She threw 7.0 innings with eight hits, five earned runs, four walks and a season-high nine strikeouts.
  • Johnson gave Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st off a sacrifice fly.
  • Matlock hit a "Little League Home Run" in the bottom of the 2nd when she reached base on an error and another error allowed her to score.
  • CCSJ tied the game in the top of the 3rd on a two-run home run over the right field wall.
  • The Cougars rallied for four runs in the home half of the 3rd. Johnson picked up an RBI on a groundout, Matlock drove in a pair of runs on her first triple of the season and Becker followed with an RBI double to make it 6-2.
  • Calumet St. Joseph cut the deficit to 6-4 in the top of the 5th on a two-run double.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, O'Connor hit her team-leading eighth sac fly of the year and Johnson lined an RBI single to center to extend the lead to 8-4.
  • The Crimson Wave hit a solo home run in the top of the 6th.
  • Kissee sliced an RBI single through the right side of the infield and O'Connor capped the scoring with a two-run base hit back up the middle in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Two:
  • Matlock finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Wroble also went 3-for-4, stealing two bases and scoring a run.
  • O'Connor was 2-for-4 with a run.
  • Johnson doubled and went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Crane had a hit in three at-bats, scoring twice, stealing two bases, drawing a walk and adding an RBI. With her two steals, she now has 40 stolen bases on 42 attempts this season. Crane is just the third player in program history to swipe 40 or more bases in a year.
  • Freshman pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, moving her record to 9-1, after tossing 7.0 innings with just four hits, two earned runs, a walk and a career-high six strikeouts.
  • SXU plated five runs in the bottom of the 1st. Crane laced an RBI single to center field, Matlock split the gap in left center for an RBI base hit, O'Connor sliced an RBI single to left field, Kissee drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and Johnson scored on a passed ball.
  • O'Connor tallied an RBI on a groundout and an error scored another run to give Saint Xavier a 7-0 lead after two innings of play.
  • CCSJ belted a home run over the center field wall in the top of the 4th.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, O'Connor pulled an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it 8-1.
  • Calumet St. Joseph hit its fourth home run of the day, a solo shot to left field, in the top of the 6th.
No. 19 Saint Xavier (23-6/6-0 CCAC) travels to Davenport, Iowa to take on St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in a CCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
